How good is the Open Mic Network? Don’t take my word for it, here is what people say about the Open Mics and how it’s helped them as an artist/songwriter/musician.

Melanie Sander

“How has the Open Mic at the Dan helped me musically?

I’ve been singing and making music and generally made a racket for 18 years now. I’ve been in bands, choirs, duos, I’ve studied music at tafe, performed at Fringe festivals and recorded Cds. But, I can honestly say, getting involved with the Dan’s open mic nite has been the highlight of my musical experience.

The hard work and professionalism shown week after week by Corey, Darren, Peter, Bill and the rest of the Dan staff has made Wednesdays at the Dan the best open mic I have been to, including in pubs all over Europe.

Why? Because the integrity and heart Corey and the gang put in makes The Dan more than a venue for me and my cronies to show-off in: its a supportive space to grow and experiment as a performer. The friendships and working relationships I have formed from the Wed open Mic have been rewarding in ways other experiences can’t match. In short, I love the Wed night Open Mic at The Dan: it rocks my world”

“I’ve been playing for about 15 years in various places – overseas and in Australia.

When I first started playing I was hugely fortunate to find a blues club that encouraged new players to get up and play, even if you played the same song every week! The club had a very supportive environment and everyone was welcome.

Until coming to Adelaide and discovering Open Mic @ The Dan, I wasn’t sure that I would find that sort of environment again. It’s given me a huge amount of confidence, playing at the Dan and I love getting up to play.

Where else could I get away with playing Minnie Ripperton’s ‘Loving You’ and still show my face the next week?!

Thanks Corey, Peter, Darren and all the amazing players that turn up every week to make this the best – without doubt – Open Mic around!”

Joe Murphy

“Probably around 3 years ago after having spent some time practicing guitar like a lunatic at home i decided i needed to get my music out to the wider world. At first I found this a little tricky until I discovered the wonderful world of Open Mics.

Starting out playing live is a scary experience for all of us. The beauty of the open mic circuit is that it provides us with a relaxing environment were we can make our mistakes learn our lessons and begin on our musical journey. Having said that I rate a lot of people I have met at open mics as highly if not more than a lot of well known artists. I very much enjoyed the process of learning the art of live performance.

I play regular live gigs around Adelaide now which unfortunately doesnt leave me much time to get down to any open mics.

The encouragement and help I recieved from the open mic community was invaluble in my musical journey I would strongly recommend to any musicians who sit at home with wonderful talents to get out there and bring your music to the world”.
