Open Mic Network Update – August 2nd, 2010

Hi everybody,

As you’ll notice in this weeks update that there are no photos. The reason for this is that I accidentally deleted all of the photos in my camera last Wednesday trying to delete a fuzzy photo of one of the acts. DOH! That’s what you get for trying to do more than one thing at once :)

Anyways, last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was fantastic, even though winter is still clutching its icy grip upon us all, the crowds are starting to come back and new performers are still gracing the Open Mic stage.

New performers such as The Rockbottoms, Alex Cameron and Vivienne Holloway.

Great stuff by all!

This week is a very busy week here at the Open Mic Network with three events for you to choose from (or, you can go to all of them)

Open Mic @ The Dan
Wednesday August 4th, 2010
Daniel O’Connell Hotel
165 Tynte Street, North Adelaide
8pm – Midnight

Plus, make sure you mark these other events off in your diary in BOLD RED PEN!

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
Thursday August 5th, 2010
The Third Cork

8pm – Midnight(ish)

Plus…

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan #3
Special Guest – Kelly Menhennett
Sunday August 8th, 2010
Daniel O’Connell Hotel
165 Tynte Street, North Adelaide
5pm – 9pm

For all Open Mic Network events I suggest you get in early to avoid disappointment. I’ll be there from 6:30pm (and 3:30pm for the Sunday Sessions) to take down names.

See you this week,

Corey :)

Open Mic Network Update – July 5th, 2010

Hi everybody,

My apologies for not having last weeks update online, I just simply ran out of time last week but I will make it up to you this week.

Open Mic @ The Dan
Over the last fortnight the Open Mic @ The Dan has enjoyed a resurgence in performer numbers. Even though we’re in the midst of a very cold winter for Adelaide standards the need to hang out at The Dan on a Wednesday night transcends the cold.

Besides, the open fire at The Dan is very, very enticing indeed, just like the talent that has been gracing the Open Mic stage of late.

We had three new faces at The Dan over the last couple of weeks. In the first week, we had Jasper Cownie who put on a fantastic show that the performer friendly audience couldn’t get enough of.

Jasper Cownie

Last week we had a duo consisting of Melbournites Larissa Agosti and Kath Nelligan and man, did they tear the house down. Great songwriting, great stage presence and great harmonies. Larissa had a CD for sale which I purchased and listened to soon after. I was very impressed.

Larissa & Kath

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
Last Thursday saw the third instalment of the monthly Open Mic @ The Third Cork and let me just say that it was absolutely brilliant both in atmosphere and in sheer talent. Every performer who graced the stage at The Third Cork was a quality act including 2 new faces.

The new faces were Melissa Waters and a duo called Dr Nick. Thanks for coming down, hope to see you again real at the next Open Mic @ The Third Cork which will be on Thursday August 5th.

Melissa Waters

Dr Nick

A big thanks also goes out to Catherine and her crew at The Third Cork for making us all feel very, very welcome (and for those yummy pizzas). Can’t wait for August 5th.

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan Starts July 11th
It’s not long to go until the first “Sunday Sessions” @ The Dan gets underway on Sunday July 11th. In case you’re wondering, the Sunday Sessions is essentially the Open Mic @ The Dan but on a Sunday and with a special guest performer thrown into the mix for good measure.

The special guest performer for the first Sunday Sessions is none other than Anthony D’Antonio (YAY!)

It kicks off at 5pm (with Anthony starting a 40 minute set from between 6pm and 6:30pm) and finishing at 9pm so you have time to hit the hay at a reasonable hour in preparation for the start of the working week. I’ll be at The Dan from between 3pm and 3:30pm to take down names.

Please bear in mind, this is on a 3 month trial so the more people that go to these sessions, the better chance we have at making this a permanent fixture on The Dan’s entertainment calendar.

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with great friends, great food/drink and great music.

Here’s a reminder of what is happening this week on the Open Mic Network:

Open Mic @ The Dan
Wednesday July 7th, 2010

Plus, mark this in BOLD RED PEN!

“Sunday Sessions” @ The Dan #1
Sunday July 11th, 2010
Daniel O’Connell Hotel
165 Tynte Street, North Adelaide

For all Open Mic Network events I suggest you get in early to avoid disappointment. I’ll be there from 6:30pm to take down names.

Open Mic Network Update – June 21st, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a fantastic showcase of the present and emerging musical talent in Adelaide. It’s amazing what talent is out there and I’m so glad that the Open Mic Network enables people to have a place to develop themselves as a performer and their songs if they write them.

There was one new face who graced the Open Mic stage and his name is Brett Dunham who came from Perth to participate. I’m sure he was doing other stuff in SA but I like to think that all roads lead to the Open Mic @ The Dan.

Since Brett first found out about the Open Mic Network via the internet he and I have exchanged a number of phone calls and emails and it was a pleasure to meet up with him for the first time last week. I must say that Brett’s performance blew me and a number of audience members away.

Can’t wait to catch up again.

Brett Dunham

SCALA “From Open Mic To Stage #2″
Last Thursdays SCALA songwriting showcase was a bit thin on the crowd front but not on the talent front. Even though there were some initial sound issues to contend with, all performers played to an inch of their lives to the small but deeply appreciative crowd.

Joe Murphy

Anthony D’Antonio

The next “From Open Mic To Stage” showcase will happen in a couple of months time. I’ll let you know more details as they arise.

SCALA FOOM Songwriting Competition
Speaking about all things SCALA, just a reminder that time to enter your song in SCALA’s FOOM (Festival Of Original Music) Songwriting Competition is fast running out as entries close on July 1st. For more information on FOOM go to the SCALA website.

Open Mic @ Third Cork Reminder
While I’m on the reminders track, the next Open Mic @ The Third Cork will be on in ten days time on Thursday, July 1st. Make sure you mark that event in your diary in BOLD RED PEN.

Open Mic Network Update – May 23rd, 2010

Hi everybody,

My apologies for not putting out an update last week, I’ll try and make it up to you all this week.

The Open Mic @ The Dan has been steady in attendance over the last couple of weeks. The mad rush to get onto the list at the beginning of the night is not so hectic but the list is full by the end of the night which makes my job a little easier and still ensures that most importantly, whoever is on the list gets a go on the stage.

A Bloody Big Crowd

I think the change in the weather has caught some people by surprise which (like me) has made them a little sick now that cold/flu season is now upon us. Never mind, we’ll just keep soldiering on making sure that Wednesday nights are a highlight of your week.

There have been a number of new faces gracing the Open Mic stage over the last fortnight, they are:

  • The DeeTees (Chris Dewin and Marcus Walsh)
  • Fledderjohn
  • Rhianna Ford (WOW! What a voice)
  • Jemma Molton (one half a Pretty Radio, not necessarily new but different)
  • Craig Atkins (YAY! About time)
  • Michael K

Thanks so much for giving the Open Mic @ The Dan a go. You’re welcome back anytime :)

Craig Atkins - The face just says it all :)

1. You would’ve noticed if you were at the Open Mic @ The Dan over the last fortnight that I was conducting a bit of a survey. You see, both Darren and I are negotiating with The Dan to extend the Open Mic concept to a fortnightly Sunday afternoon/evening under the working title of “Sunday Sessions @ The Dan”.

It’s still an Open Mic however there will also be a paid 30-45 minute “guest artist” spot (which must be all originals) included in the lineup which will create more gigging opportunities for Open Mic’ers and Adelaide musicians as a whole. Darren and I will book the spot.

The survey questions are:

  • Would you attend a Sunday Session?
  • What time-slot would you prefer (2pm – 6pm), (4pm – 8pm), (6pm – 10pm)?

If you have any thoughts regarding this then please let me know by email or on the Open Mic Network Facebook Discussion Page.

2. It’s almost that time again to pack your picnic basket and your jerry can for a trip to Semaphore for the next installment of the monthly Open Mic @ The Third Cork. The first one was a success and from what I’ve been hearing, the next one is going to be just as big. It’s happening on June 3rd and my tip for the evening is to get in early and grab yourself one of their pizzas – YUMMY!

Just a reminder of what is happening this week…

Open Mic Network Update – May 11th, 2010

Wow! What a week it has been.

Between a busy Open Mic @ The Dan and the Grand Opening of the Open Mic @ The Third Cork both Darren and I were completely run off our feet.

But we wouldn’t have it any other way :)

Last weeks Grand Opening of the Open Mic @ The Third Cork in Semaphore was an astounding success, so much so it exceeded even my optimistic expectations. We had a full book of performers who performed to an inch of their lives in the wonderfully performer-friendly atmosphere that is the Third Cork.

While it was a welcome sight to see some Open Mic regulars at The Third Cork it was also fantastic to see some new and/or local acts taking to the Open Mic stage, namely Angie Starr, Andrea Dawson (what a voice), Nick & John who gave us a Beatles masterclass, Alicia & Heath rocking it out for the first time as a covers duo plus the Lady Gaga acoustic stylings of Sean Kemp. Thanks guys for giving the Open Mic @ The Third Cork a go, you’re welcome back anytime.

Andrea Dawson

Nick & John

Happy Vegemites

A special thanks needs to go out to Catherine and her staff at The Third Cork for the wonderful food, drink and especially the hospitality shown to us. It really does help the cause when the venue is beautifully presented and the management “get” what an Open Mic is all about. Thank You!

“What about the Open Mic @ The Dan?” I hear you say…

Well, to my surprise it was not too busy and not too slow. The pace was just right plus, we had a new face grace the stage at The Dan, his name is Arty Delrio and he pumped out a fantastic performance. Not bad for someone who was just passing through Adelaide.

Arty Delrio

Here’s a reminder of this weeks Open Mic Network activities for you all:

Open Mic Network Update – March 23rd, 2010

Hi everybody,

Well, it only seems like last Friday that the madness of the Open Mic @ The Dan was upon us… Wait a minute, it was! Last Friday’s Open Mic went off.

It went off because of the performers that were there and the people who came along to watch, listen and generally be part of the Open Mic community for that night and even though it was a little quiet on the running sheet we made up for it in sheer strength in crowd numbers. Two waves of pub crawls made sure of that.

At one point The Dan was so packed you couldn’t move and Darren and I were down the front protecting the gear and the performers at the same time.

In all of the madness there was one new face and her name was Jess Lambert. She put on a great show and the crowd she pulled along with the seething hoards that she touched, moved and inspired with her performance was amazing to witness.

I also wanted to mention a big welcome back to the Open Mic stage to Matt Saunders who has been away from it all for a while. It was great to see you and your beautiful Orange Gretch guitar doing what you do best.

First of all, I just received a text message from John McCall who runs the Open Mic @ The QA (Queens Arms) saying that tonight’s Open Mic is the last night EVER at the QA and that he’s now looking for a new venue. My suggestion is that you go to the Queens Arms Hotel which is located at 88 Wright Street in the City tonight and support John and his Open Mic. Starts at 8pm

I’ll try and get there myself…

Lastly, I’ve just finished talking to the owner of a wonderful restaurant/venue in Semaphore called The Third Cork located on the first floor of 26 Semaphore Road regarding starting up an Open Mic there on the first Thursday of every month starting on Thursday May 6th from 8pm until Midnight. I’m very proud that The Third Cork wants to tap into our Open Mic community and I’m also excited to tap into theirs, this has the potential to be a huge monthly event.

Musically, the Semaphore area prides itself on being a vibrant and creative community and an Open Mic thrown into the already eclectic mix will only enhance what is already there. I’ll let you know more details as they come to hand but if you have any questions or, want more information, just let me know.

Here’s a reminder about this weeks Open Mic @ The Dan for you all:

Open Mic @ The Dan
Wednesday March 24th, 2010
Daniel O’Connell Hotel
165 Tynte Street, North Adelaide
8pm – Midnight

Plus, make sure you put this in your diary and circle it with a big red pen…

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
First Thursday Of The Month
(Starting May 6th, 2010)
The Third Cork, Semaphore
First Floor, 26 Semaphore Road
8pm – Midnight

Remember, if you’re the first to arrive at The Dan please get a paper and pen and jot down the names of the others in the order of their arrival. I’ll be there around 6:30pm to take over from there plus I’ll buy you a drink for your trouble.

It’s still first come first served so be early, have a meal and enjoy the ambiance that is The Dan.

See you Wensdee,

Corey :)
