Sunday Sessions

Open Mic Network Update – October 5th, 2010

Hi everybody,

The weather been just perfect the last few days and with that comes the prospect of a very busy Spring and Summer season at the Open Mic Network. Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was well on its way to becoming a jam packed weekly event again.

Even though it was a challenge at times to be heard due to a rather boisterous group of road workers at the bar, the night was full of talent and some inspiring entertainment.

We had a full book including 2 new acts. The first new act were a duo consisting of Angeline and David and the second was a singer/songwriter who goes by the name of 2 Unique who came in at the tail-end of the evening and proceeded to blow everybody away with her heartfelt songs.

Angeline & David

Kris Selling His Guitar

It Was Packed!

It was also nice to welcome back some people who have been away for a while, people such as Harry Shulten, Brett Stokes, Tim Forth, Mike Trake, Martin Giebner and our resident heckler Kenny Green. It was a wonderful evening.

Sunday Sessions = Not Continuing
It is with regret that I need to inform you all that management at The Dan have decided not to continue the Sunday Sessions @ The Dan concept. I want to first of all thank everyone who attended the sessions and witnessed an amazing array of acts

I also want to personally thank the artists who contributed their time and promotional efforts over the last three months into trying to make the Sunday Sessions work for all, Anthony D’Antonio, Courtney Robb, Kelly Menhennett, Simon Peter, Joe Man Murphy and especially Andy & Marta who introduced some of the members of the Hillbilly Hoot to the Sunday Sessions.

Both Darren and I couldn’t have done these events without your support. Your willingness to help out is proof that we have a vibrant community that’s willing to work together to make things happen.

Open Mic Addict Poll
I’m halfway through the count to find out who is the Open Mic Addict so I’m hoping that I’ll have an answer for you all next week. I must say that going through all of the Open Mic running sheets has been a fascinating experience, a great exercise is watching something grow and develop.

SCALA Open Mic Network Showcase #3
I’ve almost finalised the line-up for the third SCALA Open Mic Network (formally called “From Open Mic to Stage”) Showcase gig happening on Thursday October 28th. I’m waiting on one more confirmation so when that comes through I’ll let everybody know via the updates and of course Facebook/MySpace.

Open Mic Network Update – September 27th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last week had seen a steady increase in numbers attending the Open Mic @ The Dan and the last Sunday Sessions series of gigs respectively which is very, very encouraging. The warmer weather is now allowing people to stop hibernating and start getting out and about again.

Attendance at the Open Mic @ The Dan was a marked improvement from the last four weeks but it was the last Sunday Session that exceeded the expectations of everyone.

It was a packed house and a packed running sheet plus there were some new faces thrown into the mix, five in total over both events. They were:

Iain Wright (great songs and great voice)

Brett Galt-Smith (all the way from Canberra)

Stretch (from the Hillbilly Hoot)

The Self Preservation Society (Stylish from head to toe)

MudHouse (Heavy Metal Banjo madness)

Thanks for giving the Open Mic Network a go. You’re welcome anytime :)

Sunday Sessions, Will They Continue?
Now that the last of the trial series of 6 Sunday Sessions has finished, I’ll be speaking to Greg at The Dan this week to see if the concept will continue. Personally, I’d love to see it continue as a once a month thing to allow better promotion but we’ll see what Greg says.

Watch this space…

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
Just reminding everyone that the next Open Mic @ The Third Cork is not this Thursday because of it being the last day of September but the Thursday after which is October 7th (see below for more information).

Open Mic Showcase @ SCALA
I’ve been asked by Rob Childs at SCALA to put together the third Open Mic Showcase for the organisation. It will be on October 28th at Higher Ground Arts Cafe. I’ll let you know more details as they come to hand.

Who Is The #1 Open Mic Addict?
I’ve kept all of the running sheets since the first Open Mic @ The Dan on November 6th, 2006 (4th birthday soon) and just for fun I thought I’d set myself a challenge of finding out who is the #1 Open Mic Addict.

I reckon it would be really cool to find out which Open Mic’er is the one who has attended Open Mic Network events the most so this week I’m going to start counting and hopefully I’ll have an answer for you next update.

Open Mic Network Update – September 20, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was again quieter than normal. This has been a trend over the last 4 weeks however, it has given performers an opportunity to perform more songs than ever before but the way I see it is that we all need to enjoy the calm before the Spring/Summer rush which is fast approaching.

I can feel it in my bones :)

We had a new face grace the Open Mic stage. His name is Simon James Betts and he goes under the name of Soul Trader. He was playing songs that are regulars on his own performing repertoire. Personally, I’ve known Simon for a long time and it was great to see him performing his songs once again at The Dan.

Welcome Back Martin :)

Just a quick reminder that the last Sunday Sessions @ The Dan in a trial series of 6 is happening this Sunday September 26th at The Dan with special guests Andy and Marta who will amaze everybody once again with their beautiful songs and angelic harmonies.

Listening to Andy and Marta is almost akin to a religious experience. Their music purifies your ears, that’s how good they are so come on down and check them out as well as participate in the Open Mic that surrounds their performance.

Here’s a reminder of what is happening this week on the Open Mic Network:

Open Mic Network Update – September 13th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last week was a busy week for the Open Mic Network and now that we’re experiencing the first weeks of Spring (which means that Summer is just around the corner) it’s going to get even busier with everybody coming out of their winter hibernation.

Is it just me or have we had an amazingly cold and wet Winter?

Anyhow, on with the update…

Open Mic @ The Dan
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a quiet affair, quieter than the week before. We still had an almost full book but people were arriving at The Dan later after doing something else like seeing a band.

It’s great to see that the Open Mic @ The Dan is being used as a meeting place as well as a Open Mic.

No new faces this week but we did have Steve Sheehy and Mike Trake returning to the Open Mic stage after a long(ish) absence.

Steve Sheehy (aka Grizzlesod)

Mike Trake

The Trendy Tramp (Nice Bass, Nice Pose)

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan
Joe Man Murphy cranked it up last Sunday to a very appreciative crowd of Joe Man fans and punters alike. it was really great to see Joe doing his stuff in a 45 minute slot as it really gave him a chance to build a quality show around his songs.

It was just Joe, a guitar and a stompbox. Pure class!

The Open Mic around Joe’s performance was also pure class with performers such as Anthony D’antonio, Lindsay Boyd and of course The Violent Rage Of Steve McQueen keeping the crowd entertained.

It was a great afternoon of music.

SongDare
I wanted to let you all know that I’ve started a video series on my website called SongDare. Some of you might’ve heard me talk about this concept but it goes like this…

You request a song, and I mean any song, no matter how bizarre or beautiful it may be, and if I can play it just by using my voice and an acoustic guitar, I’ll make a video of it, put it up on YouTube and embed the video on my website.

I have experimented with this in the past through the Open Mic @ The Dan however, doing it this way will inspire me to keep on going with it plus, I can do the videos at my own pace, as time allows.

I’ve put the first one up already. It’s Waiting for A Girl Like You by Foreigner and it was requested ages ago by Noni Espinoza of Caramigo fame.

You can view on my website or view it on YouTube. If you have a SongDare for me to attempt then contact me and I’ll see what I can do for you. Let me know what you think.

Open Mic Network Update – September 6th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Apologies for missing out on last weeks update but I was just way too busy however, I’ll make it up to you all this week.

Open Mic @ The Dan
It was an unusually quiet night at The Dan last week, so much so that we had spaces left on the running sheet for the first time in… a very long time. That of course didn’t detract from the fact that it was a wonderful night of entertainment and camaraderie for all involved.

There was one new act that really took the opportunity given to them to showcase their own music. They were a four piece outfit called Minority Tradition and they were absolutely fantastic.

Minority Tradition

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
We had probably the biggest turnout of audience and performers at the latest Open Mic @ The Third Cork thanks to Heather Frahn and her “Big Song” songwriting workshop participants. Because of this we had 9 new faces on the night.

I personally want to thank Heather Frahn and her workshop participants Elsa, Marlee, Liz, Brenda, Amy, Jeremy, Ben and Natalie for braving the cold and having a go on the Open Mic stage. You’re welcome anytime :)

Big Song Project CD

Ben & Natalie

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan – #’s 4 and 5
The August 29th Sunday Sessions at The Dan was fantastic. We had a full book and Simon Peter was on fire with Sarah O’Brien on violin providing some wonderful counterpoint to Simon’s music.

Simon Peter & Sarah O’Brien

This coming Sunday Session (the 5th out of a series of 6) has Joe Murphy gracing the Open Mic stage as the special guest artist. Joe is currently experimenting with a new direction with his music involving an acoustic guitar, stompbox and a looping machine.

You’re going to love the music that he creates from this setup.

WARNING: Gratuitous Self Promotion Alert
Just a couple of things that I wanted to tell you about:

1. I’ve decided to start teaching guitar again after a long absence so, if you want to either start learning guitar from scratch or, to broaden your knowledge on guitar with someone who has been playing for about 25 years then contact me.

For more information about what I can do for you and your guitar playing go to my website.

2. As well as starting up guitar lessons I’m also available to help you with your music business and songwriting needs. Consider me like a coach or mentor rather than a consultant (sounds way too formal) but either way, my experience and knowledge over my 25 years of involvement as a songwriter and musician can be used to your advantage.

If you want to know more please contact me or, for more information about what I can do for you and your music career, go to my website.

Open Mic Network Update – August 24th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Only one more week until Winter is officially over and if you’re like me, it can’t come around quick enough. Right now my fingers feel like they’re frozen blocks of ice.

Thank goodness we have places like the Daniel O’Connell Hotel with their open fires and warm inviting atmosphere.

Sounds like a great place to hold a Open Mic ;)

Speaking about The Dan… Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan proved again to be an event of high quality entertainment and great social interaction through the universal language of music.

We had a new face grace the Open Mic stage. His name is Paul Keenan who is originally from Ireland but he now calls Adelaide home. He got up and did three Pearl Jam covers that blew the audience away. If you closed your eyes you would’ve sworn that Eddie Vedder was on stage.

Paul Keenan

I know I mention new faces a lot in these updates but I also want to take the time to thank the loyal core of regulars who support the Open Mic community week in and week out through their performances and their friendship.

I don’t want to single anybody out or make some sort of list because I don’t want to miss anyones name but please be aware that I really appreciate your support and I will let you know personally to this effect.

I also want to remind you all that the Sunday Sessions @ The Dan #4 with Simon Peter as special guest is on this Sunday August 29th. I can’t wait to hear SP do his thing again, I love the way he performs and his songwriting is superb. You’re going to love this weeks Sunday Sesh.

Open Mic Network Update – August 16th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was all a blur for me as I was held up due to a previously organised rehearsal that I needed to be at.

Notwithstanding that, I still managed to get to the Open Mic with 2 minutes to spare but felt rushed all night because of it, sos much so I forgot my camera and therefore no photos but, Sean Wiegand and his trusty pen and paper came to the rescue. He decided that sketching some artists would be the way to go and as you can see below, the results speak for themselves.

Click on the images to see them full size.

That aside, I still had a great night, the list was full to the brim and the performances were fantastic.

There were a couple of new faces who graced the Open Mic stage last week. First of all was Ray Melton’s friend Gordon who formed a duo with Ray for the night and both of them performed very well considering that the Open Mic @ The Dan was their first performance together in over a year. Well done!

The second new face is a fellow by the name of Ben Todd who was celebrating his birthday last week and decided to get up on stage. What followed was an amazing performance that stunned everyone there, including some of his friends who had no idea that Ben could perform the way he did.

Personally, I thought Ben was superb and it shows to me again the power of the Open Mic Network in getting people out of their bedrooms and onto the stage…

Where they belong!

In other Open Mic Network news…

I just wanted to let you all know that Sunday Sessions @ The Dan #4 with special guest Simon Peter will NOT be happening on Sunday August 22nd but the week after on Sunday August 29th. If the upcoming Sunday Sesh was like the last one then it promises to be HUGE!

Open Mic Network Update – August 9th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last week was a very busy week as it was one of those rare times that the Open Mics at The Dan and The Third Cork plus, the Sunday Sessions all happened at once.

Phew!

Nevertheless, all of the events provided some amazing opportunities to meet new people and to hear some amazing music.

Between the Open Mics at The Dan and The Third Cork we had 12 new performers spread over 10 acts which qualifies as a new record in my books. It just goes to show that the word is getting out that music is alive and well in this town

  • Chris Eves
  • Dan Isaac
  • Dan Spackman
  • Clancy Retallick
  • David Rogers
  • Damon Evans
  • Adrian
  • 2UP (a new duo if you haven’t guessed)
  • Tristan Newsome
  • Hana and Elly

I want to mention a special shout-out to everyone at the Open Mic that happens every Thursday night at the Royal Family Hotel down at Port Elliot which is where Clancy Retallick and David Rogers came from. I’m going to make sure I get down there and check it out very, very soon. Sounds like a hoot.

Clancy Retallick

David Rogers

The Sunday Sessions @ The Dan was another success with special guest Kelly Menhennett providing an amazing performance for the very appreciative crowd. For me, the other big highlight of the night was the return of “The Violent Rage Of Steve McQueen” who literally took over The Dan and made themselves at home.

Open Mic Network Update – August 2nd, 2010

Hi everybody,

As you’ll notice in this weeks update that there are no photos. The reason for this is that I accidentally deleted all of the photos in my camera last Wednesday trying to delete a fuzzy photo of one of the acts. DOH! That’s what you get for trying to do more than one thing at once :)

Anyways, last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was fantastic, even though winter is still clutching its icy grip upon us all, the crowds are starting to come back and new performers are still gracing the Open Mic stage.

New performers such as The Rockbottoms, Alex Cameron and Vivienne Holloway.

Great stuff by all!

This week is a very busy week here at the Open Mic Network with three events for you to choose from (or, you can go to all of them)

Open Mic @ The Dan
Wednesday August 4th, 2010
Daniel O’Connell Hotel
165 Tynte Street, North Adelaide
8pm – Midnight

Plus, make sure you mark these other events off in your diary in BOLD RED PEN!

Open Mic @ The Third Cork

Open Mic Network Update – July 26th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Man, is it my imagination or is it getting colder before it gets warmer in Adelaide? I don’t want to start talking about the weather but I’m so very glad that the Daniel O’Connell has a couple of open fires to keep everything nice and cozy that’s for sure.

Open Mic @ The Dan
Speaking about The Dan, the Open Mic @ The Dan was its usual busy self. We had a full book which included two new faces.

First of all there was Lindsay Boyd’s mate Maurie who pumped out some late 50′s, early 60 rock for all of us to enjoy

Maurie

Secondly there was Ray Melton who gave the Open Mic audience three of his best as well.

Ray Melton

Other highlights of the night for me were:

  • Ange & Kate with their lovely harmonies
  • Martin Giebner and his Xaphoon
  • Andrew Stott and his drummer mate Liv
  • The return of Mike Trake and Mighty Mick

Martin Giebner & Xaphoon

Open Mic Theme Nights?
While all of this Open Mic’ery was going on my good friend (and very regular Open Mic punter) Kathryn suggested that I should think about including some theme nights into the Open Mic program.

Hmmm, Open Mic theme nights… What do you think? I personally think it’s a great idea.

Kathryn started brainstorming some theme ideas on the running sheet and the ones that caught my eye were:

  • 80′s Keyboard Songs “Unplugged”
  • Songs with the word “train” in them (Kenny will love that one)
  • Aussie anthems
  • Mullet/Hair Band music
  • Modonna covers

This idea certainly has legs, any theme night ideas? Let me know.

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan
Yesterday’s Sunday Session @ The Dan was a fairly quiet affair but then again, we were competing with the AFL Showdown, MasterChef finale and the Great Debate. All things considering, we did pretty well in the performer and attendance stakes.

Courtney Robb was in one word AWESOME! She managed to double no, triple the crowd and she had everyone (me included) eating out of the palm of her hand. Courtney is a class act and deserves a music career that others only dream of.

Courtney Robb

I Have A Favour To Ask Of You…
As you may or may not know I’m recording my CD and so far I’ve recorded 18 guide tracks which I have on my website. I need to whittle down the 18 songs to a final 12 and this is where I need your help.

What I want from you guys is some feedback on what songs you’d keep on the CD and what songs you’d leave behind. To do this just go to the CD Project page of my website, have a listen to the songs and leave your feedback by email or via the comments section of the page.

A big thank you to all in advance.
