Open Mic Network Update – August 24th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Only one more week until Winter is officially over and if you’re like me, it can’t come around quick enough. Right now my fingers feel like they’re frozen blocks of ice.
Thank goodness we have places like the Daniel O’Connell Hotel with their open fires and warm inviting atmosphere.
Sounds like a great place to hold a Open Mic
Speaking about The Dan… Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan proved again to be an event of high quality entertainment and great social interaction through the universal language of music.
We had a new face grace the Open Mic stage. His name is Paul Keenan who is originally from Ireland but he now calls Adelaide home. He got up and did three Pearl Jam covers that blew the audience away. If you closed your eyes you would’ve sworn that Eddie Vedder was on stage.

Paul Keenan
I know I mention new faces a lot in these updates but I also want to take the time to thank the loyal core of regulars who support the Open Mic community week in and week out through their performances and their friendship.
I don’t want to single anybody out or make some sort of list because I don’t want to miss anyones name but please be aware that I really appreciate your support and I will let you know personally to this effect.
I also want to remind you all that the Sunday Sessions @ The Dan #4 with Simon Peter as special guest is on this Sunday August 29th. I can’t wait to hear SP do his thing again, I love the way he performs and his songwriting is superb. You’re going to love this weeks Sunday Sesh.

Open Mic Network Update – August 16th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was all a blur for me as I was held up due to a previously organised rehearsal that I needed to be at.
Notwithstanding that, I still managed to get to the Open Mic with 2 minutes to spare but felt rushed all night because of it, sos much so I forgot my camera and therefore no photos but, Sean Wiegand and his trusty pen and paper came to the rescue. He decided that sketching some artists would be the way to go and as you can see below, the results speak for themselves.
Click on the images to see them full size.
That aside, I still had a great night, the list was full to the brim and the performances were fantastic.
There were a couple of new faces who graced the Open Mic stage last week. First of all was Ray Melton’s friend Gordon who formed a duo with Ray for the night and both of them performed very well considering that the Open Mic @ The Dan was their first performance together in over a year. Well done!
The second new face is a fellow by the name of Ben Todd who was celebrating his birthday last week and decided to get up on stage. What followed was an amazing performance that stunned everyone there, including some of his friends who had no idea that Ben could perform the way he did.
Personally, I thought Ben was superb and it shows to me again the power of the Open Mic Network in getting people out of their bedrooms and onto the stage…
Where they belong!
In other Open Mic Network news…
I just wanted to let you all know that Sunday Sessions @ The Dan #4 with special guest Simon Peter will NOT be happening on Sunday August 22nd but the week after on Sunday August 29th. If the upcoming Sunday Sesh was like the last one then it promises to be HUGE!

Open Mic Network Update – August 9th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Last week was a very busy week as it was one of those rare times that the Open Mics at The Dan and The Third Cork plus, the Sunday Sessions all happened at once.
Phew!
Nevertheless, all of the events provided some amazing opportunities to meet new people and to hear some amazing music.
Between the Open Mics at The Dan and The Third Cork we had 12 new performers spread over 10 acts which qualifies as a new record in my books. It just goes to show that the word is getting out that music is alive and well in this town
- Chris Eves
- Dan Isaac
- Dan Spackman
- Clancy Retallick
- David Rogers
- Damon Evans
- Adrian
- 2UP (a new duo if you haven’t guessed)
- Tristan Newsome
- Hana and Elly
I want to mention a special shout-out to everyone at the Open Mic that happens every Thursday night at the Royal Family Hotel down at Port Elliot which is where Clancy Retallick and David Rogers came from. I’m going to make sure I get down there and check it out very, very soon. Sounds like a hoot.

Clancy Retallick

David Rogers
The Sunday Sessions @ The Dan was another success with special guest Kelly Menhennett providing an amazing performance for the very appreciative crowd. For me, the other big highlight of the night was the return of “The Violent Rage Of Steve McQueen” who literally took over The Dan and made themselves at home.

Open Mic Network Update – August 2nd, 2010

Hi everybody,
As you’ll notice in this weeks update that there are no photos. The reason for this is that I accidentally deleted all of the photos in my camera last Wednesday trying to delete a fuzzy photo of one of the acts. DOH! That’s what you get for trying to do more than one thing at once
Anyways, last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was fantastic, even though winter is still clutching its icy grip upon us all, the crowds are starting to come back and new performers are still gracing the Open Mic stage.
New performers such as The Rockbottoms, Alex Cameron and Vivienne Holloway.
Great stuff by all!
This week is a very busy week here at the Open Mic Network with three events for you to choose from (or, you can go to all of them)

Open Mic Network Update – July 26th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Man, is it my imagination or is it getting colder before it gets warmer in Adelaide? I don’t want to start talking about the weather but I’m so very glad that the Daniel O’Connell has a couple of open fires to keep everything nice and cozy that’s for sure.
Open Mic @ The Dan
Speaking about The Dan, the Open Mic @ The Dan was its usual busy self. We had a full book which included two new faces.
First of all there was Lindsay Boyd’s mate Maurie who pumped out some late 50′s, early 60 rock for all of us to enjoy

Maurie
Secondly there was Ray Melton who gave the Open Mic audience three of his best as well.

Ray Melton
Other highlights of the night for me were:
- Ange & Kate with their lovely harmonies
- Martin Giebner and his Xaphoon
- Andrew Stott and his drummer mate Liv
- The return of Mike Trake and Mighty Mick

Martin Giebner & Xaphoon
Open Mic Theme Nights?
While all of this Open Mic’ery was going on my good friend (and very regular Open Mic punter) Kathryn suggested that I should think about including some theme nights into the Open Mic program.
Hmmm, Open Mic theme nights… What do you think? I personally think it’s a great idea.
Kathryn started brainstorming some theme ideas on the running sheet and the ones that caught my eye were:
- 80′s Keyboard Songs “Unplugged”
- Songs with the word “train” in them (Kenny will love that one)
- Aussie anthems
- Mullet/Hair Band music
- Modonna covers
This idea certainly has legs, any theme night ideas? Let me know.
Sunday Sessions @ The Dan
Yesterday’s Sunday Session @ The Dan was a fairly quiet affair but then again, we were competing with the AFL Showdown, MasterChef finale and the Great Debate. All things considering, we did pretty well in the performer and attendance stakes.
Courtney Robb was in one word AWESOME! She managed to double no, triple the crowd and she had everyone (me included) eating out of the palm of her hand. Courtney is a class act and deserves a music career that others only dream of.

Courtney Robb
I Have A Favour To Ask Of You…
As you may or may not know I’m recording my CD and so far I’ve recorded 18 guide tracks which I have on my website. I need to whittle down the 18 songs to a final 12 and this is where I need your help.
What I want from you guys is some feedback on what songs you’d keep on the CD and what songs you’d leave behind. To do this just go to the CD Project page of my website, have a listen to the songs and leave your feedback by email or via the comments section of the page.
A big thank you to all in advance.

Open Mic Network Update – July 19th, 2010
Hi everybody,
There’s no rest for the wicked this week so I’ll keep this update brief.
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was hit pretty hard by the very cold weather we’ve been having of late and I personally haven’t remembered feeling this cold in a while. Spots 1 to 3 were empty so Darren and I got up and started the night and I must say that I really enjoyed the opportunity to be the first cabs off the rank.
The first spot is normally taken by Garth Dutton however, he informed me by email that he fell over and hurt his wrist and therefore is unable to play guitar for a few weeks. I want to put out a get well call to Garth and if anyone else in the community has his number or email please send him your best wishes.
That will make recovery for him so much easier.
Also, I wanted to remind you all that the next installment of the Sunday Sessions @ The Dan is happening this Sunday, July 25th kicking off at 5pm with Courtney Robb as the special guest. Mark it in your diary and tell all your friends, the whole night is not to be missed.
Here are some photos from last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan.

Open Mic Network Update – July 12th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Attendance-wise, last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan experience pre-winter performer and audience numbers. It was like everyone who took a few weeks off to acclimatise to the colder weather all decided to turn up at once. Mind you, I’m not complaining one little bit as it was great to see a whole heap of familiar face plus, a whole heap of new ones.
In fact we had a record number of new faces at the Open Mic @ The Dan. Five new acts comprising of seven new people:

Nick & John (Open Mic @ The Third Cork favourites)

Angela & Kate

Luke

Sam

Tim
Thank you all for venturing down to the Open Mic @ The Dan. I certainly would love to see you all again as I was very, very impressed by your performances
Now, for an update on the first Sunday Sessions @ The Dan. It was a success!
We had a full book, a full pub, full bellies (especially after eating the Linguini special – YUM!) and a full evening of wonderful entertainment spearheaded by special guest performer Anthony D’Antonio.
Names for the running sheet were a little hard to come by early however, it seemed that after 5:30pm all roads lead to the Daniel O’Connell Hotel and punters and musicians alike were treated to some wonderful performances.
There were 2 new acts that graced the Open Mic stage. First of all there was a duo from Melbourne just passing through calling themselves “Average At Best” (but they were much better than that trust me) and secondly, a trio going under the name of “The Violent Rage Of Steve McQueen.”

Average At Best

Steve McQueen’s Violent Rage
If that’s not the best band name you’ve heard of in a long time well… You got to get out more

Open Mic Network Update – July 5th, 2010
Hi everybody,
My apologies for not having last weeks update online, I just simply ran out of time last week but I will make it up to you this week.
Open Mic @ The Dan
Over the last fortnight the Open Mic @ The Dan has enjoyed a resurgence in performer numbers. Even though we’re in the midst of a very cold winter for Adelaide standards the need to hang out at The Dan on a Wednesday night transcends the cold.
Besides, the open fire at The Dan is very, very enticing indeed, just like the talent that has been gracing the Open Mic stage of late.
We had three new faces at The Dan over the last couple of weeks. In the first week, we had Jasper Cownie who put on a fantastic show that the performer friendly audience couldn’t get enough of.

Jasper Cownie
Last week we had a duo consisting of Melbournites Larissa Agosti and Kath Nelligan and man, did they tear the house down. Great songwriting, great stage presence and great harmonies. Larissa had a CD for sale which I purchased and listened to soon after. I was very impressed.

Larissa & Kath
Open Mic @ The Third Cork
Last Thursday saw the third instalment of the monthly Open Mic @ The Third Cork and let me just say that it was absolutely brilliant both in atmosphere and in sheer talent. Every performer who graced the stage at The Third Cork was a quality act including 2 new faces.
The new faces were Melissa Waters and a duo called Dr Nick. Thanks for coming down, hope to see you again real at the next Open Mic @ The Third Cork which will be on Thursday August 5th.

Melissa Waters

Dr Nick
A big thanks also goes out to Catherine and her crew at The Third Cork for making us all feel very, very welcome (and for those yummy pizzas). Can’t wait for August 5th.

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan Starts July 11th
It’s not long to go until the first “Sunday Sessions” @ The Dan gets underway on Sunday July 11th. In case you’re wondering, the Sunday Sessions is essentially the Open Mic @ The Dan but on a Sunday and with a special guest performer thrown into the mix for good measure.
The special guest performer for the first Sunday Sessions is none other than Anthony D’Antonio (YAY!)
It kicks off at 5pm (with Anthony starting a 40 minute set from between 6pm and 6:30pm) and finishing at 9pm so you have time to hit the hay at a reasonable hour in preparation for the start of the working week. I’ll be at The Dan from between 3pm and 3:30pm to take down names.
Please bear in mind, this is on a 3 month trial so the more people that go to these sessions, the better chance we have at making this a permanent fixture on The Dan’s entertainment calendar.
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with great friends, great food/drink and great music.

Open Mic Network Update – June 21st, 2010
Hi everybody,
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a fantastic showcase of the present and emerging musical talent in Adelaide. It’s amazing what talent is out there and I’m so glad that the Open Mic Network enables people to have a place to develop themselves as a performer and their songs if they write them.
There was one new face who graced the Open Mic stage and his name is Brett Dunham who came from Perth to participate. I’m sure he was doing other stuff in SA but I like to think that all roads lead to the Open Mic @ The Dan.
Since Brett first found out about the Open Mic Network via the internet he and I have exchanged a number of phone calls and emails and it was a pleasure to meet up with him for the first time last week. I must say that Brett’s performance blew me and a number of audience members away.
Can’t wait to catch up again.

SCALA “From Open Mic To Stage #2″
Last Thursdays SCALA songwriting showcase was a bit thin on the crowd front but not on the talent front. Even though there were some initial sound issues to contend with, all performers played to an inch of their lives to the small but deeply appreciative crowd.

Anthony D’Antonio
The next “From Open Mic To Stage” showcase will happen in a couple of months time. I’ll let you know more details as they arise.

Open Mic Network Update – June 14th, 2010
Hi everybody and Happy Birthday Liz
I hope you are all enjoying the Queens Birthday long weekend in some way. Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a steady affair with a couple of welcome returns to the Open Mic stage.
First of all there was Brendan Lines who has been carving a musical niche out for himself locally and globally for a little while. It was fantastic to see and hear him again after a long absence.

Brendan Lines
The other welcome return was Craig Atkins performing solo. He is better known as the percussionist for the Simon Peter Band and more recently, The Timbers but he showed the full crowd at The Dan his skills combining a stompbox, acoustic guitar, pedalboard and didge into an inspired set of original pieces that impressed me greatly.

Craig Atkins
Another highlight of last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was Courtney Robb who has recently been chosen by Triple J Unearthed to go to the three day songwriting and music business festival “SongSummit” in Sydney. Here is part of the official press release:
“Adelaide singer/songwriter Courtney Robb has been selected by the crew at Triple J Unearthed to take part in this years Song Summit.
Song Summit is a three day festival, held in Sydney, and is a major creative, business development and networking expo for the music industry. Courtney will not only be flown to Sydney attend the Summit, but also take part in an exclusive songwriting workshop with APRA Songwriter of the Year, Julian Hamilton from the Presets, Vanda & Young Songwriting winner Washington and ARIA award winner Kevin Mitchell AKA Bob Evans.
This workshop will be hosted by Dom Alessio from Home and Hosed and recorded for the Triple J Unearthed website.”
Congratulations from everybody in the Open Mic Network Courtney, you serve as an inspiration to us all. For more details go to www.courtneyrobb.com

July 11th and 25th
August 8th and 29th
September 12th and 26th

Playing on the same bill as Darren and I are Jane & Sam, Joe Murphy and Anthony D’Antonio. I’m really looking forward to this and if the first “From Open Mic To Stage” showcase was anything to go by, it’s going to be HUGE!
SCALA FOOM 2010
Speaking about SCALA, they have a songwriting competition running at the moment called FOOM (Festival Of Original Music) in which entries close on July 1st. It’s my belief that entering songwriting competitions that provide you with feedback is one of the best ways in which you can develop as a songwriter and FOOM does this brilliantly.
