Open Mic Network Update – July 13th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody and a big welcome to all new subscribers to the Open Mic Network.

Thank you to everybody who has give either Darren or myself feedback regarding the Open Mic @ The Joiners. We are fast approaching the end of the trial period and all feedback is most welcomed. The online discussion is still up on the Open Mic Network Facebook Page so if you haven’t done so already, pop in and give us your views.

Speaking about Facebook, we are 5 fans short of getting our 100 fan target.

Once the Facebook page has 100 fans we can change the Facebook generated URL to our own URL (something easier to remember like www.facebook.com/openmicnetwork). If you’re on Facebook please consider becoming a fan and/or tell all your friends about the page.

Share the love around :)

Open Mic @ The Dan
Last week was a bumper week for the Open Mic @ The Dan. It seems that with every week that goes by it gets busier and busier.

We had 2 new faces grace the Open Mic stage. The first of them was well known singer Kylena Vigus who accompanied Rob Pickering on 3 songs and did a beautiful job. The second new face was Jacob Majba who informed me that his Open Mic performance was his first anywhere. I was really impressed with what he did and I hope that both Jacob and Kylena come back soon :)

It was also marked the welcome return of the duo of David Corkhill and John Veikerts plus the sweet, sweet sounds of Ute and her accordion.

Open Mic @ The Joiners
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Joiners was the quietest one yet with only 9 performers on the running sheet however, everyone who attended made the night last until 11pm by playing 4 songs instead of the usual 3. I must admit, the weather was very much against us that night, I hadn’t seen it so wet in a long, long time.

It was really great to see the return of Meredith W. Riley to the Open Mic stage. She was showcasing some new of her material and I tell you what, I could’ve listened to it all night but it was the first song that Jen Turner sang acapella that for me, was the highlight of the night. That song got the hairs standing on the back of everyone’s necks.

Breathtaking…

Open Mic Network Update – July 6th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody,

It’s amazing how taking a couple of weeks off from writing updates does wonders for general wellbeing and gaining a better sense of perspective on things. My batteries are now recharged and ready to go.

First of all I wanted to wish Ian Warren a very happy 50th birthday. Ian held a party on The Gov balcony last Saturday night and it was a hoot. It was one big Open Mic essentially and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Thanks for the invite mate.

One thing I have noticed over the last couple of weeks is that the attendances at The Dan have risen again while The Joiners have been decreasing. Seeing that the trial period for The Joiners finishes at the end of this month, it would be a good time to find out from you all what you think of the Open Mic @ The Joiners.

Has it worked for you? Pro’s and Con’s? I’ve put up a discussion topic on the Open Mic Network Facebook Page called “The Dan vs The Joiners – Honest Feedback Please” for you to check out and comment on. You can get to it HERE and while you at it, have a look at the other discussion topics on offer and put in your 2 cents worth. You know you want to :)

Speaking about Facebook pages, the Open Mic Network Facebook Page has now got 90 fans which is a fantastic effort however, we’re 10 fans short for the page to get its own URL (apparantly FB will give pages a URL of its choice if the page has 100 fans or more) so, if you’re not a fan of the Open Mic Network Facebook Page then please consider being one.

If you’re already a fan of the Open Mic Network then broadcast to your friends list and help build this amazingly talented Open Mic community, one performer at a time.

Open Mic @ The Dan
As mentioned a little earlier, the Open Mic @ The Dan has experienced a marked increase in attendance making a spot on the list a very lucrative one indeed. The last fortnight has also seen a few new faces grace the Open Mic stage. Faces such as:

  • Luka – From Sydney, this dynamic performer charmed his way through to the hearts of the audience via his amazing songs.
  • Little Hefty – Also from Sydney (but born in Adelaide and now making this fine town his home again) he gave The Dan a stunning performance just using voice, acoustic guitar and stompbox. Noyce!
  • Jessica Braithwaite – Sang her songs like a possessed crazy woman (well, one of her songs was called “Crazy” I think). Thoroughly entertaining both her and her crowd.
  • Adam Waldron – The man plays blues guitar like a master twice his age. Loved every minute of his blues guitar masterclass

Open Mic @ The Joiners
While The Dan has experienced an increase in attendance, The Joiners on the other hand has experienced a marked downturn in attendance. As mentioned earlier I’ve put up a discussion topic on Facebook to see what your thoughts are.

Even though there is a smaller number performers that doesn’t mean that the quality of performers has diminished. In fact it seems that the Open Mic @ The Joiners has been the catalyst of the formation of some Open Mic supergroups.

The most notable supergroup is “The Robinsons” made up of David Robinson, Lindsay Boyd and Costa (of course) and “The Folettes” made up of Bryan Foley, Darren Zaza and Costa (again). It’s great to see the Open Mic community networking in this way and it’s amazing what music comes out of these impromptu unions.

Special mention needs to go out to Loosh who dazzles the Open Mic @ The Joiners every time he steps onto the stage. Love ya work mate :)

Ok, just a reminder of what is happening this week.

Open Mic Network Update – June 15th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody,

Last week was a very quiet week all round for the Open Mic Network but hey, thank goodness for The Dan and The Joiners having open fires and good old fashioned pub grub to warm the cockles. This cold snap we’re experiencing will continue for a little while yet but the quality of the Open Mic performances at both venues keep getting hotter and hotter.

I was talking with Darren Zaza the other day about how many Open Mic’ers are really developing as performers and songwriters. I think that this is due in part to their regular appearances at The Dan or The Joiners. I know for a fact that some performers are using the Open Mics as a way of rehearsing their material.

Something for all of us to think about…

Open Mic @ The Dan
The Dan provided a warm and toasty atmosphere for everyone who turned up and even though we just missed out on a full running sheet all performers managed to fill in their times very nicely.

Out of the 14 performers we had one new face by the name of Jen Turner who sang two covers and one of her own compositions which I really enjoyed listening to. Personally I’m really interested in what other original material Jen has up her sleeve.

jenturner

Now that there is a little bit more room on the running sheet to move things around it would be great to see Bill the Barman get up and do a few tunes. I’ll make that one of my goals for the next few weeks because you can’t get enough of Bill.

bill

Bills Best Side

Open Mic @ The Joiners
Initially it was so quiet at the beginning we started proceedings at 8:15 to ensure we had some performers to kick off the night with however, a little later in the night the running sheet began to fill. Personally, I’d stay home too if I had the chance, it was a very cold night.

Last week at The Joiners marked the return of Angels Fan #1, Greg Milton who turned on his drum machine, strapped on his SG and cranked up the distortion to belt out 3 of his own songs but for me, the highlight was getting Glennis from behind the bar up on stage for a rousing version of “Stand By Me” with Darren and myself backing her up.

Open Mic Network Update – June 8th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody and a big welcome to new subscribers of the Open Mic Network mailing list.

Even though winter officially started last week, it didn’t deter the Open Mic faithful from braving the cold and participating at The Dan of The Joiners for some good old fashioned Open Mic fun. From my experience, winter is a popular time to be at an Open Mic especially when the venues provide a very warm and comfortable atmosphere to perform in.

Open Mic @ The Dan
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan saw the welcome return to the Open Mic stage of three past performers.

Garth Dutton firmly established his spot as the “first cab off the rank” after a lengthy absence with a wonderfully spirited return performance.

Next was harp-master Lord Stompy who gave us a masterclass in harmonicaship (is there such a word… there is now) and delighted the crowd with his Uke playing and last but not least we witnessed the welcome return of The Texettes who weaved their fine original country tunes around the room.

lordstompy

Lord Stompy & Uke

Included in the mix was indeed another new face. His name is Scott Morphett and he proved himself to be a very fine singer/songwriter on the Open Mic stage. After his performance Scott assured me that he would be back next week. I can’t wait to hear what he has instore for us then.

scottmorphett

Open Mic @ The Joiners
I think the car-parking issues that have dogged the Open Mic @ The Joiners for the last 3 weeks had temporarily scared away some of the crowd. Even though the Entertainment Centre was empty and there were car-parks a plenty it was a fairly quiet night.

Only 13 spots were filled however, the performers that filled them were all class.

In fact, last weeks Open Mic @ The Joiners was a guitar players heaven. The small but very appreciative audience of performers and Joiners Arms regulars had the pleasure of witnessing players such as Ross Neilson, Looshbaby, Jon Parrish and of course the wonderful Erica Graf.

If Bruce McAvaney were there he would’ve said the night was SPECIAL!

jonparrish2

Jon Parrish

We did have one new face in the crowd and her name was Katherine Phelps, a spoken word artist.

Not since the Zen Koans of BT Cassidy in the early days of the Open Mic @ The Dan has a spoken word artist graced the Open Mic stage and let me tell you, Katherine’s performance was truly a breath of fresh air which further reinforces the fact that the Open Mic Network is open to all performers.

Songwriters, musicians, poets, spoken word artists and comedians are all welcome to get out of the house and have a go in a very performer friendly environment.

Katherine has her own blog in which she writes about her experience at the Open Mic @ The Joiners. You can read it HERE. I hope more spoken word artists and comedians utilise the Open Mic Network because the door is always open.

Open Mic Network Update – June 1st, 2009

sunmicHi everybody, and a big welcome to all new Open Mic Network subscribers :)

Today is officially the first day of winter which means colder weather and scarves, jackets and thick socks however, thankfully, both The Dan and The Joiners have open fires, fantastic food and strong coffee to give warm to the mind, body and soul.

Of course let’s not forget the alcoholic beverages on offer plus the warm company and the friendly staff.

Open Mic @ The Dan
The Open Mic @ The Joiners has given The Dan a new lease of life. No longer is the running sheet full before 7pm with performers in a mad panic as to when they are to perform. As the MC the extra breathing space has made my job a hell of a lot easier and now I’m far less stressed and more focussed on the task at hand.

We had 2 new faces grace the Open Mic @ The Dan stage. First of all there was a new trio called “Seldom 6″ fronted by Sel. Next was a singer/songwriter by the name of Colin Hardman who gave us a little bit of himself for 3 songs.

Open Mic @ The Joiners
Even though the Pussycat Dolls at the Entertainment Centre caused some intense car-parking challenges, we still had a full running sheet. It was a cold night but it was toasty warm inside.

Out of the 16 performers scheduled for the night there were 2 new faces.

First cab off the rank was Mick Pepler who informed me before he went on stage the his Open Mic debut was actually his first performance anywhere. I was very, very impressed that Mick decided to go first (talk about getting out of your comfort zone) and his performance was fantastic.

I wished my first solo performance went as smoothly as Micks did.

Secondly there was Shane Haycox who appeared with the trio “Flannell Lounge” a couple of weeks ago but his performance was his first solo performance at the Open Mic @ The Joiners. His version of REM’s “The One I Love” was just superb and for me, bought back some excellent memories, thanks Shane :)

Last week saw the return of Erica Graf, the acoustic guitarist extraordinairre who again dazzled the audience with the mastery of her instrument. Awesome stuff!

This Thursday the Entertainment Centre has no performances scheduled so there will be lots of car-parking available. No more driving around for ages, YAY!

Other News
Missing Drink Vouchers – I just want to remind everyone that the drink vouchers handed out to performers after their time on stage are only to be used for the night they’re received, not to be taken home and/or transferred to another Open Mic.

I started off with 30 of the new laminated vouchers but on last count I have 9 left. Where have they all gone? I’m well aware that some of the vouchers are either lost or still at the respective venues however, I know for a fact that some people keep them and use them later.

If you have a voucher in your possession then please either hand it back to me or, at the very least use them up so I can get them back from the venues. Thanks :)

Web Stuff – The new Open Mic Network website is coming along nicely. I haven’t been able to do too much to it as I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather of late however, as I’m feeling better I can start getting some more information online and updqate the MySpace and Facebook pages more regularly.

Open Mic Network Update – May 25th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody,

Both Open Mics ran very smoothly last week. The Dan was busy but very, very manageable with 18 performers gracing the stage including one new face David Blackmore (no relation to Richie Blackmore).

He gave us a couple of songs accompanied by “percussionist for hire” Costa who is the Open Mic Network’s version of James Brown’s “The Hardest Working Man In Showbusiness”.

The night ended with Kenny Wison getting Carroll (bass), Glen Skuthorpe (lead guitar) and Costa (percussion) up on stage for an all in Jam. Wonderful music played by wonderful musicians and a perfect way to end off the night.

With the start of the Open Mic @ The Joiners the start time for The Dan will go back to 8pm. If there’s an influx of performers I’ll have to play the start time by ear. We’ll see how it goes.

davidblackmore

David Blackmore & Costa

The Joiners on the other hand started a little slow at first but the running sheet filled up as the night went on. For me, as MC, it felt like the good old days at The Dan.

There were 15 performers last Thursday with two new faces James Ross and Sam popping in to say hello. James wowed the audience with his 1950’s numbers while I accompanied Sam on a version of “Flame Trees”.

Loosh stopped by again to showcase some more of his original music but my person al highlight was a performance by a 1990’s cover trio called “Flannell Lounge” made up of Matt Saunders, Emily and Shane. What a great name :)

flannellounge2

Flannell Lounge in full flight

Car-parking was an issue again last week at The Joiners but unfortunately there’s not much that anybody can do about it and having “The Phantom” extend their season at the Entertainment Centre didn’t help matters however, this Thursday sees the “The Pussycat Dolls” performing at the EntCent as well so brace yourselves.

I can assure you though, from looking at the EntCent website, performances on a Thursday night won’t happen very often. I’ll try as much as I can to let you all know in advance any information regarding events at the EntCent falling on a Thursday. Events such as:

  • Ross Noble Arena Tour 2009 – June 18th
  • Princess Wishes (Disney On Ice) – June 25th
  • So You Think You Can Dance – July 16th
  • David Copperfield – August 13th

After Mr Copperfield it looks all clear to the end of 2009 however, this can change at anytime.

In other Open Mic Network news…

This website as well as the Open Mic Network as a whole is for everybody. We will only get out of it what we put into it. Now that the Open Mic Network website is in full swing I want to let you know of some of the things I want to do with the website and how you can help me out with it.

Media – I’m always on the lookout for photos, video and audio of the Open Mics in action. If you have anything that you’d like featured on this website or on the MySpace/Facebook/YouTube pages then let me know. I want to feature it and give credit where it’s due. It’s great promotion I reckon.

Testimonials – How would you answer the question “how have the Open Mics helped you as an artist/musician?” If you have an answer either send me an email or put it up on the Facebook Discussion Board. I’d love to hear from you.

Weblink – Do you have a link that you want to put in the Links Directory (eg: your website)? Let me know and I’ll make it so.

Products/Services – Are you involved with a service or do you have a product that you want to advertise to the Open Mic community through this website? If so, send me an email and we’ll work something out.

Gig Promotion – Do you perform elsewhere besides the Open Mics? Let me know when you’re gigging and I’ll put them up. This site is the perfect place to advertise your gig through but please bear in mind I won’t advertise Wednesday or Thursday gigs other than the Open Mics.

I’m sure you’ll understand why ;)

Ideas/Feedback – What do you want this community to do for you? How can we improve? What are we doing right/not right? Any ideas, feedback or questions? Let me know, I’m all ears.

Last but not least…

Very soon I’m going to start a “Featured Performer” section on this site. This idea is still in the embryonic stage but it will entail answering some interview type questions for a profile that will stay up on the website for a week, fortnight, month… who knows as yet. Stay tuned on how you can participate in this initiative.

Open Mic Network Update – May 19th, 2009

sunmicHi everyone,

Wow! Last week was a week I won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

The Open Mic @ The Dan ran without a hitch even though it was a little quieter than normal. We had 4 spots left over which is a rare thing to experience however, I put that down to performers conserving their creative strength for the Open Mic @ The Joiners the night after.

Out of the 14 performers who graced the Open Mic stage there were 2 new faces.

The first being Sal Bonavita who gave us all a masterclass in the art of classical guitar. Seeing Sal up on stage further reinforced the notion I’ve always had in the back of my mind that Open Mics are a viable means of finding and encouraging new talent. Sal may have been playing guitar for years but it was the first time anyone at the Open Mic had seen him.

I could feel the excitement of the exposure of talent and the discovery of new music in the air.

The second new face was Mal Capone (yes, that’s his real name) who couldn’t wait to get up on stage and do his thing. His version of the John Denver classic “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” was an absolute hoot. I have a video of it, you can get to it here.

salbonavita

Now, about last weeks Grand Launch of the Open Mic @ The Joiners

It was an astounding success. Garth and the staff of the Joiners Arms were over the moon with the amount of people attending, the quality of the performers and the entertainment value of the evening.

I love it when a plan comes together :)

The night surpassed everyone’s expectations and I couldn’t have asked for a better start. I was expecting between 10 to 12 performers to kick things off with but we got a full book of 18 plus there were a few other performers who wanted to just have a look.

It was packed even though finding a carpark was a bit of an issue (I didn’t realise that the EntCent extended The Phantom” for another 2 weeks) however, once you got inside the Joiners Arms Hotel it was a musical oasis.

The food is good, the drinks are flowing, the staff are friendly and into the whole Open Mic concept (that really helps) and the overall space ROCKS!

joinerscrowd

The Performer-Friendly Crowd

Out of the 18 performers we had three new faces. First cab off the rank was a guy named Loosh and what a way to start off the new Open Mic. He was amazing, what a voice, what a guitarist, I want to see more of this guy.

Secondly we had Emily who is one half of a newly formed duo called The Wondertwins. Her partner Matt Saunders (a well known Open Mic’er himself) makes up the other half. It was her first time on stage playing the double bass to Matt’s songs and she did an amazing job.

The last new face for the night was Erica Graf who astounded the audience with her virtuosic acoustic guitar playing. She played two songs on the guitar at the same time which is a feat I had not heard since seeing Tommy Emmanuel live many years ago. WOW!

You would have noticed that I was taking pictures and taking video of both Open Mics. I’ve started to put some stuff together and posting them either on this website or on the Open Mic YouTube Page. Yes that’s right the Open Mic Network is now on YouTube so check it out and let me know what you think.

This is a video taken from the brand new Open Mic Network YouTube Page I’ve just put up the other day.

It features Andy Armstrong and Marta Bayly singing the Andy Armstrong tune “Cafe Coolsville” at the Grand Launch of the Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms on May 14th.

Check out the amazing harmonies…

My apologies for redness of the video, I’ll have the lighting rectified very soon however, this should give you a taste of the amazing talent that graces the Open Mic stages at The Dan and The Joiners,

Tonight’s The Night – Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms

sunmic“Tonight’s the night, it’s gonna be alright” – Rod Stewart

It’s 2:30pm in the afternoon and I’ve done all I can with the promotion of this new Open Mic so now it’s time to let go of any expectation and leave it all up to the universe.

I’m nervous but excited at the same time but I know that this new Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms is a natural extension of the initial phenomenon that is the Open Mic @ The Dan.

I knew that the Open Mic @ The Dan had become too busy at times when performers were starting to panic about getting to the venue in time to put their names down rather than concentrate their creative energies on putting on a great set of three songs. It’s my hope that this new Open Mic will remedy this fact somewhat.

This Open Mic community that Darren Zaza and myself created just over two and a half years ago has now grown to a size in which (I firmly believe) two Open Mics can be run in one week. My goal is to eventually have three going but I’m happy to wait for that one.

I’ve always been a huge believer in the “organic growth” of an idea.

Initially the Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms is being run for a 12 week trial period but, if the popularity of the Open Mic @ The Dan is to go by, I can see this new Open Mic becoming a much needed permanent fixture in the Adelaide music scene.

Tonight is going to be huge, spread the word and I hope to see you there,

Corey :)

Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms – The Grand Launch

sunmicI’m now starting to count down the days until the Grand Launch of the Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms this coming Thursday, May 14th from 8pm until Midnight.

From the feedback I’ve been getting this new Open Mic will become as popular as the well established Open Mic @ The Dan which has been going strong for just over 2.5 years.

The Open Mic @ The Joiners is initially running for a 12 week trial to see how it goes and after that (all going well) it will become a permanent fixture in the ever growing Open Mic Network.

The reason for starting up a second Open Mic is very simple, there’s a huge demand for it as the Open Mic @ The Dan is now bulging at the seams with quality performers wanting to have a go.

My goal with the Open Mic Network has been to firmly establish a community of songwriters, musicians and punters who want to support each other and the greater music scene in Adelaide with the Open Mics at The Dan and now at The Joiners being the hub of this community.

Some people have asked me whether there’s going to be any difference between the Open Mics at The Dan and The Joiners.

My answer to the question is NO.

The Open Mic @ The Dan formula is working and working very well so there’s no reason to tamper with it. The Open Mic @ The Joiners will run in the same way. I’ll be there from 6:30pm to take names, first come will be first served as I’m not going to take any pre-bookings.

Everyone will get three songs on the Open Mic stage followed by a free drink at the end of the performance, simple as that…

Anyway, the Joiners Arms Hotel is located at 9 Manton Street Hindmarsh nestled between the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and Hindmarsh Stadium.

The best thing about the Joiners is that there are no residents nearby to complain about noise and while The Dan has to close the bar by midnight, the Joiners can remain open for as long as the Open Mic crowd demands it.

All in all, it’s going to be a fantastic night. I hope to see you there,

Until then, see you next Thursdee,

Corey :)
