About
Hello and welcome to The Open Mic Network, a portal for grassroots music in South Australia and beyond.
The Open Mic Network was started by singer/songwriter/musician Corey Stewart, Darren Zaza and Peter Mundy as a way of bringing songwriters and musicians from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels together in a performer-friendly environment to perform their new material, catch up with old friends and network to their hearts content.
All of this started with the the inception of the Open Mic @ The Dan in November 2006 and since then it has become an institution among the Adelaide music scene, so popular in fact that another Open Mic is opening up on a 12 week trial at the Joiners Arms Hotel in May 2009.
With all going well this new Open Mic will permanently become yet another outlet for anyone who wants to have a go.
My goal with this site is to provide you with an up-to-date resource for anything to do with Open Mics and the music industry in general. Anyone who is working on a professional level in the music industry had to start somewhere and being involved in an Open Mic is a perfect way to start for anyone wanting to follow this type of career path.
Some of the things you’ll find on this site are:
- Open Mic updates
- Information for songwriters and musicians
- Pictures, audio and video of Open Mic action
- An Open Mic directory
- Open Mic products, services and downloads
- A mailing list to subscribe to
Personally, an Open Mic is more than just a place to play, it’s an essential part of the music industry. It is my hope that this website reflects this view.
We all have to start somewhere, I wish this was around when I first started.

[The Open Mic Network]
Open Mic (as quoted in Wikipedia): An open mic or open mike (or open spots ) is a live show where audience members may perform at the microphone. Usually, the performers sign up in advance for a time slot with the host or master of ceremonies.

The Open Mic Network is a community of songwriters, performers and musicians who are of all backgrounds and skill levels committed to encouraging artistic performance of all styles and types through a series of performer-friendly venues.
It’s also a community dedicated to helping one another become the best songwriters, performers and musicians they can be through the social and networking aspects of the Open Mic.
The network is open to anybody and everybody who is willing to get out of their comfort zones and have a go.
[Corey Stewart]
Corey Stewart is an award winning singer/songwriter/musician with over 20 years experience in the craft of songwriting and the art of performing.
Over the years he has performed in countless bands, written hundreds of songs, played thousands of gigs, toured most of Australia and in between all that, made many friends and experienced all the highs and lows of being a professional musician.
Corey discovered the power of the Open Mic and the way it can bring people together purely by accident.
In 2006, at the insistence of the Daniel O’Connell Hotel (where he had been a regular performer for a number of years) he started the Open Mic @ The Dan, now an institution on the Adelaide music scene with good friend and sound guru Darren Zaza.
His initial thoughts on the Open Mic concept was that of “amateur nights from hell” however, as the Open Mic @ The Dan gathered momentum and the word quickly spread he realised that an Open Mic was not just a place to play but an essential part of any thriving music scene.
The Open Mic Network is Corey’s way of capitalising on this fact.
In between his many and various projects such as FIGJAM, Corey runs Orangutang Music. He is also a mad-keen blogger and social networking adventurer.
