Open Mic Network Update – September 27th, 2010

Hi everybody,
Last week had seen a steady increase in numbers attending the Open Mic @ The Dan and the last Sunday Sessions series of gigs respectively which is very, very encouraging. The warmer weather is now allowing people to stop hibernating and start getting out and about again.
Attendance at the Open Mic @ The Dan was a marked improvement from the last four weeks but it was the last Sunday Session that exceeded the expectations of everyone.
It was a packed house and a packed running sheet plus there were some new faces thrown into the mix, five in total over both events. They were:

Iain Wright (great songs and great voice)

Brett Galt-Smith (all the way from Canberra)

Stretch (from the Hillbilly Hoot)

The Self Preservation Society (Stylish from head to toe)

MudHouse (Heavy Metal Banjo madness)
Thanks for giving the Open Mic Network a go. You’re welcome anytime

Sunday Sessions, Will They Continue?
Now that the last of the trial series of 6 Sunday Sessions has finished, I’ll be speaking to Greg at The Dan this week to see if the concept will continue. Personally, I’d love to see it continue as a once a month thing to allow better promotion but we’ll see what Greg says.

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
Just reminding everyone that the next Open Mic @ The Third Cork is not this Thursday because of it being the last day of September but the Thursday after which is October 7th (see below for more information).
Open Mic Showcase @ SCALA
I’ve been asked by Rob Childs at SCALA to put together the third Open Mic Showcase for the organisation. It will be on October 28th at Higher Ground Arts Cafe. I’ll let you know more details as they come to hand.
Who Is The #1 Open Mic Addict?
I’ve kept all of the running sheets since the first Open Mic @ The Dan on November 6th, 2006 (4th birthday soon) and just for fun I thought I’d set myself a challenge of finding out who is the #1 Open Mic Addict.
I reckon it would be really cool to find out which Open Mic’er is the one who has attended Open Mic Network events the most so this week I’m going to start counting and hopefully I’ll have an answer for you next update.

Open Mic Network Update – September 20, 2010

Hi everybody,
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was again quieter than normal. This has been a trend over the last 4 weeks however, it has given performers an opportunity to perform more songs than ever before but the way I see it is that we all need to enjoy the calm before the Spring/Summer rush which is fast approaching.
I can feel it in my bones
We had a new face grace the Open Mic stage. His name is Simon James Betts and he goes under the name of Soul Trader. He was playing songs that are regulars on his own performing repertoire. Personally, I’ve known Simon for a long time and it was great to see him performing his songs once again at The Dan.

Just a quick reminder that the last Sunday Sessions @ The Dan in a trial series of 6 is happening this Sunday September 26th at The Dan with special guests Andy and Marta who will amaze everybody once again with their beautiful songs and angelic harmonies.
Listening to Andy and Marta is almost akin to a religious experience. Their music purifies your ears, that’s how good they are so come on down and check them out as well as participate in the Open Mic that surrounds their performance.

Open Mic Network Update – September 13th, 2010

Hi everybody,
Last week was a busy week for the Open Mic Network and now that we’re experiencing the first weeks of Spring (which means that Summer is just around the corner) it’s going to get even busier with everybody coming out of their winter hibernation.
Is it just me or have we had an amazingly cold and wet Winter?
Anyhow, on with the update…
Open Mic @ The Dan
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a quiet affair, quieter than the week before. We still had an almost full book but people were arriving at The Dan later after doing something else like seeing a band.
It’s great to see that the Open Mic @ The Dan is being used as a meeting place as well as a Open Mic.
No new faces this week but we did have Steve Sheehy and Mike Trake returning to the Open Mic stage after a long(ish) absence.

Joe Man Murphy cranked it up last Sunday to a very appreciative crowd of Joe Man fans and punters alike. it was really great to see Joe doing his stuff in a 45 minute slot as it really gave him a chance to build a quality show around his songs.
It was just Joe, a guitar and a stompbox. Pure class!
The Open Mic around Joe’s performance was also pure class with performers such as Anthony D’antonio, Lindsay Boyd and of course The Violent Rage Of Steve McQueen keeping the crowd entertained.
It was a great afternoon of music.

SongDare
I wanted to let you all know that I’ve started a video series on my website called SongDare. Some of you might’ve heard me talk about this concept but it goes like this…
You request a song, and I mean any song, no matter how bizarre or beautiful it may be, and if I can play it just by using my voice and an acoustic guitar, I’ll make a video of it, put it up on YouTube and embed the video on my website.
I have experimented with this in the past through the Open Mic @ The Dan however, doing it this way will inspire me to keep on going with it plus, I can do the videos at my own pace, as time allows.
I’ve put the first one up already. It’s “Waiting for A Girl Like You“ by Foreigner and it was requested ages ago by Noni Espinoza of Caramigo fame.
You can view on my website or view it on YouTube. If you have a SongDare for me to attempt then contact me and I’ll see what I can do for you. Let me know what you think.

Open Mic Network Update – September 6th, 2010

Hi everybody,
Apologies for missing out on last weeks update but I was just way too busy however, I’ll make it up to you all this week.
Open Mic @ The Dan
It was an unusually quiet night at The Dan last week, so much so that we had spaces left on the running sheet for the first time in… a very long time. That of course didn’t detract from the fact that it was a wonderful night of entertainment and camaraderie for all involved.
There was one new act that really took the opportunity given to them to showcase their own music. They were a four piece outfit called Minority Tradition and they were absolutely fantastic.

Open Mic @ The Third Cork
We had probably the biggest turnout of audience and performers at the latest Open Mic @ The Third Cork thanks to Heather Frahn and her “Big Song” songwriting workshop participants. Because of this we had 9 new faces on the night.
I personally want to thank Heather Frahn and her workshop participants Elsa, Marlee, Liz, Brenda, Amy, Jeremy, Ben and Natalie for braving the cold and having a go on the Open Mic stage. You’re welcome anytime

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan – #’s 4 and 5
The August 29th Sunday Sessions at The Dan was fantastic. We had a full book and Simon Peter was on fire with Sarah O’Brien on violin providing some wonderful counterpoint to Simon’s music.

This coming Sunday Session (the 5th out of a series of 6) has Joe Murphy gracing the Open Mic stage as the special guest artist. Joe is currently experimenting with a new direction with his music involving an acoustic guitar, stompbox and a looping machine.
You’re going to love the music that he creates from this setup.

WARNING: Gratuitous Self Promotion Alert
Just a couple of things that I wanted to tell you about:
1. I’ve decided to start teaching guitar again after a long absence so, if you want to either start learning guitar from scratch or, to broaden your knowledge on guitar with someone who has been playing for about 25 years then contact me.
For more information about what I can do for you and your guitar playing go to my website.
2. As well as starting up guitar lessons I’m also available to help you with your music business and songwriting needs. Consider me like a coach or mentor rather than a consultant (sounds way too formal) but either way, my experience and knowledge over my 25 years of involvement as a songwriter and musician can be used to your advantage.
If you want to know more please contact me or, for more information about what I can do for you and your music career, go to my website.
