Open Mic Network Update – June 21st, 2010
Hi everybody,
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a fantastic showcase of the present and emerging musical talent in Adelaide. It’s amazing what talent is out there and I’m so glad that the Open Mic Network enables people to have a place to develop themselves as a performer and their songs if they write them.
There was one new face who graced the Open Mic stage and his name is Brett Dunham who came from Perth to participate. I’m sure he was doing other stuff in SA but I like to think that all roads lead to the Open Mic @ The Dan.
Since Brett first found out about the Open Mic Network via the internet he and I have exchanged a number of phone calls and emails and it was a pleasure to meet up with him for the first time last week. I must say that Brett’s performance blew me and a number of audience members away.
Can’t wait to catch up again.

SCALA “From Open Mic To Stage #2″
Last Thursdays SCALA songwriting showcase was a bit thin on the crowd front but not on the talent front. Even though there were some initial sound issues to contend with, all performers played to an inch of their lives to the small but deeply appreciative crowd.

The next “From Open Mic To Stage” showcase will happen in a couple of months time. I’ll let you know more details as they arise.

Open Mic Network Update – June 14th, 2010
Hi everybody and Happy Birthday Liz
I hope you are all enjoying the Queens Birthday long weekend in some way. Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a steady affair with a couple of welcome returns to the Open Mic stage.
First of all there was Brendan Lines who has been carving a musical niche out for himself locally and globally for a little while. It was fantastic to see and hear him again after a long absence.

Brendan Lines
The other welcome return was Craig Atkins performing solo. He is better known as the percussionist for the Simon Peter Band and more recently, The Timbers but he showed the full crowd at The Dan his skills combining a stompbox, acoustic guitar, pedalboard and didge into an inspired set of original pieces that impressed me greatly.

Craig Atkins
Another highlight of last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was Courtney Robb who has recently been chosen by Triple J Unearthed to go to the three day songwriting and music business festival “SongSummit” in Sydney. Here is part of the official press release:
“Adelaide singer/songwriter Courtney Robb has been selected by the crew at Triple J Unearthed to take part in this years Song Summit.
Song Summit is a three day festival, held in Sydney, and is a major creative, business development and networking expo for the music industry. Courtney will not only be flown to Sydney attend the Summit, but also take part in an exclusive songwriting workshop with APRA Songwriter of the Year, Julian Hamilton from the Presets, Vanda & Young Songwriting winner Washington and ARIA award winner Kevin Mitchell AKA Bob Evans.
This workshop will be hosted by Dom Alessio from Home and Hosed and recorded for the Triple J Unearthed website.”
Congratulations from everybody in the Open Mic Network Courtney, you serve as an inspiration to us all. For more details go to www.courtneyrobb.com

Sunday Sessions @ The Dan
As I mentioned in last weeks update we’re going to be trialling an extension of the Open Mic @ The Dan but with a special guest included in the proceedings twice a month from 5pm until 9pm on a Sunday. The dates earmarked for the “Sunday Sessions @ The Dan” are
July 11th and 25th
August 8th and 29th
September 12th and 26th
I’m still in the process of contacting and booking the special guests for the above dates however, make sure you put these dates in your diary and tell all your friends because I reckon we, as a community can singlehandedly rejuvenate Sunday entertainment at The Dan. Bring it on!
SCALA “From Open Mic To Stage #2″ Songwriters Showcase
This Thursday night from 8pm until 11pm at Higher Ground Arts Complex (ex “Night Train Restaurant” located at 9 Light Square) I’ll be presenting the second “From Open Mic To Stage” songwriting showcases for SCALA (Songwriters, Composers & Lyricists Association) featuring selected Open Mic Network performers.
Playing on the same bill as Darren and I are Jane & Sam, Joe Murphy and Anthony D’Antonio. I’m really looking forward to this and if the first “From Open Mic To Stage” showcase was anything to go by, it’s going to be HUGE!
SCALA FOOM 2010
Speaking about SCALA, they have a songwriting competition running at the moment called FOOM (Festival Of Original Music) in which entries close on July 1st. It’s my belief that entering songwriting competitions that provide you with feedback is one of the best ways in which you can develop as a songwriter and FOOM does this brilliantly. For more info about FOOM and how you can enter go to www.scala.org.au/comfoom.htm

Open Mic Network Update – June 7th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Last week was a bumper week of Open Mic activity for the network so to make it simpler for you I’m going to divide the update into three main sections.
1. Open Mic @ The Dan
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was business as usual, a full book overflowing with quality performers. It was one of those nights where you could shut the doors of The Dan and forget about the cold, wintery world outside and enjoy the warm and creative atmosphere inside where both punters and performers were winners.
It was fantastic to finally meet up with a chap by the name of Martin Giebner from (Austria via the UK) whom I’ve been communicating regularly via email (he found out about the Open Mic Network online) and let me tell you he plays a mean acoustic and has a great voice. A welcome addition to the community

Martin Giebner
While was one of the new faces last week there was another who needs to be mentioned. His name is Chuck Wagon Slim and he did a version of “Rawhide” that just tore The Dan to shreds. Wonderful stuff!

Chuck Wagon Slim
2. Open Mic @ The Third Cork
The second Open Mic @ The Third Cork was a bit thin on performers (Semaphore is not that far away surely) however, the place was absolutely packed with punters. Mary Trees and Jane (from Jane and Sam fame) were the only new performers to grace The Third Cork stage while the other 8 performers were at the Grand Opening last month.
I must say that for me the highlights of the night were Sean Kemp’s acoustic renditions of Lady Gaga songs as well as yours truly doing some electric guitar jamming with Jane’s songs. It was magic and the management of The Third cork were so impressed with Jane that there’s a possibility of more gigs at The Third Cork for her.

Jane & Yours Truly

It Was Packed!!!
If that’s not a reason to go to an Open Mic then I don’t know what is
Make sure you put into your diary the next exciting episode of the Open Mic @ The Third Cork which will take place on Thursday July 1st from 8pm until Midnight(ish).

SCALA Open Mic To Stage #2
Yes, it’s that time again for another SCALA Songwriter Showcase featuring Open Mic Network performers. Make sure you get to Higher Ground (9 Light Square, City) on Thursday June 17th for an 8pm start. There is a cover charge with proceeds going to the artists – $5 waged, $4 concession and $3 for SCALA members. Come along and support local original artists.
SCALA FOOM Song Competition (entries close July 1st)
While I’m chatting about all things SCALA I want to mention that every year that they hold a songwriting competition called FOOM (Festival Of Original Music) and it’s on again for 2010. Entries close on July 1st so there is a little bit of time left to get your song in. All information about FOOM 2010 can be found on the SCALA website.
Sunday Sessions @ The Dan start in July 2010
I mentioned a few weeks ago that there was talk between Darren, myself and The Dan to extend the Open Mic concept to Sunday afternoons as well as the Wednesday nights under the working banner of “Sunday Sessions @ The Dan”. Well, I’m really happy to say that we’ve finally decided on dates and times for this new concept which will be running on a trial basis for 3 months (with a big thankyou to all that participated in the survey I ran both in person and on the Facebook page).
It will start on Sunday July 11th and will run every fortnight until September 26th kicking off at 5pm and finishing at 9pm. Both Darren and I are really excited about this new concept which will be an Open Mic but with the addition of a featured guest artist playing a 30 to 45 minute set.
I’ll let you know more information when it comes to hand.
