Open Mic Network Update – May 31st, 2010
Hi everybody,
You can tell when winter is around the corner because It starts to get cold, the log fires are stoked up, more layers of clothing is put on and the temptation to stay at home looms very large on the radar. Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan finished earlier than Midnight for the first time in months, we even had 2 spare spots all night.
Between you and me I enjoyed the early minute however, what happened in between was nothing short of amazing. Act after act of quality performers were spilling out onto the Open Mic stage which was wonderful to hear.
I’ve also noticed recently that performers are now using the Open Mic @ The Dan as a place to hang, network and generally be social rather than just as a place to perform. I think that this is fantastic, I’ve always wanted to build the Open Mic @ The Dan as a musician/artist hangout as well as a performer-friendly space.
Even though there were no new faces last week I wanted to make special mention to Chris Dewin who plays in the duo The DeeTees. His classical guitar renditions were absolutely astounding and it would be safe to say that he was the highlight of the night.

It’s only three days to go until the next Open Mic @ The Third Cork is upon us. It’s on this Thursday June 3rd starting at 8pm and finishing around Midnight. As always I’ll be there early (around 6:30pm) to take down names and from the feedback on the Facebook fan and group pages it’s going to be a full book.
I got an email recently from an Open Mic’er asking me if I could assist them in “… finding any lady singers for an acoustic trio.” If this sounds like something you’d like to pursue then let me know so I can give you contact details. The rest is then up to you.
Here’s a reminder of what is happening this week:

Open Mic Network Update – May 23rd, 2010
Hi everybody,
My apologies for not putting out an update last week, I’ll try and make it up to you all this week.
The Open Mic @ The Dan has been steady in attendance over the last couple of weeks. The mad rush to get onto the list at the beginning of the night is not so hectic but the list is full by the end of the night which makes my job a little easier and still ensures that most importantly, whoever is on the list gets a go on the stage.

A Bloody Big Crowd
I think the change in the weather has caught some people by surprise which (like me) has made them a little sick now that cold/flu season is now upon us. Never mind, we’ll just keep soldiering on making sure that Wednesday nights are a highlight of your week.
There have been a number of new faces gracing the Open Mic stage over the last fortnight, they are:
- The DeeTees (Chris Dewin and Marcus Walsh)
- Fledderjohn
- Rhianna Ford (WOW! What a voice)
- Jemma Molton (one half a Pretty Radio, not necessarily new but different)
- Craig Atkins (YAY! About time)
- Michael K
Thanks so much for giving the Open Mic @ The Dan a go. You’re welcome back anytime

1. You would’ve noticed if you were at the Open Mic @ The Dan over the last fortnight that I was conducting a bit of a survey. You see, both Darren and I are negotiating with The Dan to extend the Open Mic concept to a fortnightly Sunday afternoon/evening under the working title of “Sunday Sessions @ The Dan”.
It’s still an Open Mic however there will also be a paid 30-45 minute “guest artist” spot (which must be all originals) included in the lineup which will create more gigging opportunities for Open Mic’ers and Adelaide musicians as a whole. Darren and I will book the spot.
The survey questions are:
- Would you attend a Sunday Session?
- What time-slot would you prefer (2pm – 6pm), (4pm – 8pm), (6pm – 10pm)?
If you have any thoughts regarding this then please let me know by email or on the Open Mic Network Facebook Discussion Page.
2. It’s almost that time again to pack your picnic basket and your jerry can for a trip to Semaphore for the next installment of the monthly Open Mic @ The Third Cork. The first one was a success and from what I’ve been hearing, the next one is going to be just as big. It’s happening on June 3rd and my tip for the evening is to get in early and grab yourself one of their pizzas – YUMMY!

Open Mic Network Update – May 11th, 2010
Wow! What a week it has been.
Between a busy Open Mic @ The Dan and the Grand Opening of the Open Mic @ The Third Cork both Darren and I were completely run off our feet.
But we wouldn’t have it any other way
Last weeks Grand Opening of the Open Mic @ The Third Cork in Semaphore was an astounding success, so much so it exceeded even my optimistic expectations. We had a full book of performers who performed to an inch of their lives in the wonderfully performer-friendly atmosphere that is the Third Cork.
While it was a welcome sight to see some Open Mic regulars at The Third Cork it was also fantastic to see some new and/or local acts taking to the Open Mic stage, namely Angie Starr, Andrea Dawson (what a voice), Nick & John who gave us a Beatles masterclass, Alicia & Heath rocking it out for the first time as a covers duo plus the Lady Gaga acoustic stylings of Sean Kemp. Thanks guys for giving the Open Mic @ The Third Cork a go, you’re welcome back anytime.

A special thanks needs to go out to Catherine and her staff at The Third Cork for the wonderful food, drink and especially the hospitality shown to us. It really does help the cause when the venue is beautifully presented and the management “get” what an Open Mic is all about. Thank You!
“What about the Open Mic @ The Dan?” I hear you say…
Well, to my surprise it was not too busy and not too slow. The pace was just right plus, we had a new face grace the stage at The Dan, his name is Arty Delrio and he pumped out a fantastic performance. Not bad for someone who was just passing through Adelaide.

Open Mic Network Update – May 3rd, 2010
Hi everybody,
New month = new beginnings, the time is almost upon us… It’s almost time to unleash the Open Mic @ The Third Cork this Thursday night May 6th from 8pm until Midnight.
The Third Cork is a beautiful wine bar located upstairs at 26 Semaphore Road (next to Semaphore Foodland). With great food, drink and views (and of course the music from the Open Mic community plus the wonderful musicians around the Semaphore area), this Open Mic promises to be a wonderfully inspiring event which will occur on the first Thursday of every month. I hope to see you all there because this is going to be HUGE!
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan proved to be another successful evening of quality performances and all round good times. There were no new faces gracing the Open Mic stage however, there was the return of Tim Forth after a little absence plus, the Open Mic debut of Melody Feder (from Pretty Radio) as a soloist.

1. Live & Local @ The Metro went off in a big way last Tuesday night and a big congrats goes out to John and Stewart for putting on a brilliant evening. The space is great, the PA was really good and the venue itself had a really cool vibe to it.
2. The Open Mic Network Facebook Group has just surpassed 200 members which is a great achievement in such a short space of time. In time this Facebook group will be one of the places where you can get up to date information on Open Mics around town and a great opportunity for other Open Mics and the performers that use them to promote themselves. If you haven’t become a member of the group I suggest that you do so and watch this space…
