Open Mic Network Update – April 26th, 2010
Hi everybody,
**Lest We Forget**
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was an absolute record breaker.
We had 22 performers grace the Open Mic stage and to fit everybody in we started at 7pm instead of 8pm making it the busiest Open Mic @ The Dan in its three and a half year history. With every week that passes the Open Mic @ The Dan just keeps getting better and better in terms of attendance and performance quality.
Personally I want to thank each and every one of you who came out and participated in an amazing night especially the 3 new faces that were nestled amongst the 22 performers:

Dave and Renee – From Canberra and in Adelaide because of the recent Special Olympics, they sung up and absolute storm

Ben Roberts – From “The Timbers” (Simon Basey also played last week), an amazing guitarist that impressed

Daniel Cupit – Friend of Ben and Simon of The Timbers, I really enjoyed what he played
Keep spreading the word, and tell all your friends.

1. The SCALA “Open Mic To Stage” Songwriting Showcase that I programmed at Higher Ground last Thursday was an amazing success. It was very well attended and all of the acts that performed (Shane Noonan, Rob Pickering, Peter Clayton, Pretty Radio plus Andy and Marta) had a wonderful time. I want to thank Rob Childs at SCALA for allowing me to take over one of their nights. The next SCALA “Open Mic To Stage” Songwriting Showcase will be happening on June 17th but I’ll give you more information about this event as it comes to hand.

1. It’s now just two and a half weeks before the first of our monthly Open Mic @ The 3rd Cork (First Floor, 26 Semaphore Road Semaphore) kicks off and the anticipation is building up for an amazing opening night. A big THANK YOU to all of the enquiries and positive vibes regarding this new initiative.
Both Darren and I really want to make this work so if you haven’t already marked off Thursday May 6th in your diary with a thick red pen then do so and tell all your friends. It’s going to be HUGE!
2. The boys responsible for the Open Mic @ The Queens Arms, John McCall and Stewart Cook are pleased to announce a new venue for their Tuesday night Open Mic. It’s now at the Hotel Metropolitan (46 Grote Street, City) under the new moniker “Live & Local @ The Metro”.
The Grand Opening kicks off at 8:30pm on Tuesday April 27th however, like at The Dan you need to get in early to put your name on the list and to entice you to do that there’s a happy hour to whet your whistle (I also hear the food at The Metro is awesome).
3. The SCALA Songwriter Showcase that I’ve programmed featuring Open Mic performers is now upon us. It’s on this Thursday night April 22nd starting at 8pm at Higher Ground (9 Light Square, City). Admission is $5.
4. I’ve now started an Open Mic Network Facebook Group which has passed the 100 members milestone but of course the more the merrier. If you haven’t become a member then go to the Open Mic Network Facebook Group Page and join up. You know you want to

Open Mic Network Update – April 11th, 2010
Hi everybody,
Over the last couple of weeks the Open Mic @ The Dan has been amazingly busy, bucking the post mad-march hangover trend that seems to be affecting everything else in this town at the moment.
All in all, 35 performers have graced the Open Mic stage including 3 new faces. The newbies were:

Giovanni & Lucca – Amazing duo singing some amazing songs.

Jane – THE find of the last fortnight. Found the Open Mic @ The Dan via the Triple J gig guide.
I’m noticing that there are a lot of regular Open Mic performers who are really coming along in their musicianship and performance confidence as well as others who are now playing in other venues in Adelaide.
I’d like to think that the Open Mic @ The Dan (plus The Joiners and the upcoming Third Cork) played a part in their development. That’s what the Open Mic Network is all about.
In other Open Mic news…
I’ve been asked by Rob Childs of SCALA (Songwriters, Composers & Lyricists Association) to program a SCALA songwriter showcase featuring myself and other Open Mic’ers every couple of months. The first of these is happening at Higher Ground (9 Light Square, City – the old Night Train) on Thursday April 22nd starting at 8pm.
Accompanying Darren and myself on the first (of many) showcases are Shane Noonan, Robert Pickering, Peter Clayton, Pretty Radio plus… Andy & Marta.
WOW! What a lineup
If you have (up to) 30 minutes of original material that you would like to showcase in front of a performer friendly audience then let me know. I’m looking for acts for the next showcase in June 2010.
If you want to find out more information about this amazingly supportive songwriting organisation (which I have been a proud member since 1992) then go to the SCALA website or check out their Facebook page or MySpace page. If you’re not already a SCALA member then I’d recommend you seriously consider joining.
