Open Mic Network Update – March 29th, 2010

Hi everybody,

RIP Queens Arms Open Mic

Before I start giving you the rundown on last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan, I wanted to share with you my experience in attending the very last Queens Arms open mic last Tuesday. First of all I wanted to thank you for showing up at such short notice, it was a jam packed night full of old and new Open Mic faces alike.

The Queens Arms was full, the drinks were flowing, the music was entertaining and the company was fantastic. What more could a venue ask for? Anyway, John and Stewart assure me that after a wee break they will be up and running again on a Tuesday night at a venue that actually wants them there.

For the time being the Tuesday open mic will be sorely missed. If anyone has any ideas on other potential venues let me know and I’ll pass it on to the guys.

Now, about last weeks Open Mic. Let me encapsulate it into one word, HUGE!

We were full to the brim with 18 performers starting at 7:30pm with newcomers Felix Diaz (a fantastic duo featuring Gareth Bowes and Tim O’Hare) who, off their triumphant SCALA debut gig set the Open Mic stage alight with acoustic guitar, electric guitar, stomp-box and Gareth’s voice with Tim’s harmonies.

Their quality songs set the pace for the rest of the night.

The end of the night saw the Open Mic Allstars (featuring Theo Panagaris on lead guitar) get up on stage and blast through some songs to end a wonderfully busy and entertaining night. It just gets better and better :)

In other news, I want to thank everyone for their positive feedback regarding the upcoming Open Mic @ The Third Cork. I can just tell that with 6 weeks to go before the first one gets underway that it’s going to be a big event not to be missed.

Open Mic Network Update – March 23rd, 2010

Hi everybody,

Well, it only seems like last Friday that the madness of the Open Mic @ The Dan was upon us… Wait a minute, it was! Last Friday’s Open Mic went off.

It went off because of the performers that were there and the people who came along to watch, listen and generally be part of the Open Mic community for that night and even though it was a little quiet on the running sheet we made up for it in sheer strength in crowd numbers. Two waves of pub crawls made sure of that.

At one point The Dan was so packed you couldn’t move and Darren and I were down the front protecting the gear and the performers at the same time.

In all of the madness there was one new face and her name was Jess Lambert. She put on a great show and the crowd she pulled along with the seething hoards that she touched, moved and inspired with her performance was amazing to witness.

I also wanted to mention a big welcome back to the Open Mic stage to Matt Saunders who has been away from it all for a while. It was great to see you and your beautiful Orange Gretch guitar doing what you do best.

In other Open Mic news…

First of all, I just received a text message from John McCall who runs the Open Mic @ The QA (Queens Arms) saying that tonight’s Open Mic is the last night EVER at the QA and that he’s now looking for a new venue. My suggestion is that you go to the Queens Arms Hotel which is located at 88 Wright Street in the City tonight and support John and his Open Mic. Starts at 8pm

I’ll try and get there myself…

Lastly, I’ve just finished talking to the owner of a wonderful restaurant/venue in Semaphore called The Third Cork located on the first floor of 26 Semaphore Road regarding starting up an Open Mic there on the first Thursday of every month starting on Thursday May 6th from 8pm until Midnight. I’m very proud that The Third Cork wants to tap into our Open Mic community and I’m also excited to tap into theirs, this has the potential to be a huge monthly event.

Musically, the Semaphore area prides itself on being a vibrant and creative community and an Open Mic thrown into the already eclectic mix will only enhance what is already there. I’ll let you know more details as they come to hand but if you have any questions or, want more information, just let me know.

Open Mic Network Update – March 15th, 2010

Hi everybody,

NEWSFLASH…

I want to remind everyone that because of St Patrick’s Day falling on a Wednesday this year the Open Mic @ The Dan for this week only is on Friday March 19th then it reverts back to normal the week after that and beyond.

Now with that out of the way let’s chat about last week…

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was chock-a-block full of talent having a go on the Open Mic stage. The new (pre-6:30pm) running sheet system seems to be working for the time being which makes me feel a lot better.

We had two new faces last week and they were the girls of a new duo called “Pretty Radio”. Man, the harmonies they were creating were wonderful to listen to. Come back anytime :)

If you weren’t at the Open Mic @ The Dan last week, here are some photos to show you what you missed out on…

Open Mic Network Update – March 8th, 2010

Hi everybody,

I know I haven’t updated you all in about a month but things have been so hectic lately what with Mad March and all but it’s safe to say that even though Adelaide is awash with festival fever, the Open Mic @ The Dan is as busy as ever.

I know that over the last few weeks the rush to get on the running sheet first has had some casualties and for that I apologise. It’s hard getting to The Dan at 6:30pm to find a pub full of Open Mic’ers swarming around the list but with no idea as to who turned up first (pre 6:30pm) it makes it very hard for me to be as fair and as equitable as possible when it comes to filling the Open Mic running sheet.

Last week I trialled a system (a big thank you to Rob Pickering for the initial idea and for Peter Clayton for running with it for me) where the first Open Mic’er to arrive pre 6:30pm has the responsibility of jotting down the names of the others in the order of their arrival. This then makes it easy for me to fill the running sheet fairly and objectively when I get there at 6:30pm.

Thankfully the system worked and everyone was happy. I’ll continue to fine-tune this system but I think this should demonstrate to all that the ideas of fair go at the Open Mic @ The Dan and the Open Mic community itself still remain as strong as when Darren Zaza and I first started it.

As well as the Open Mic @ The Dan holding its own in Mad March the amount of talented new faces gracing the Open Mic stage has been amazing. The new faces are:

Ryan Kemp

Grant Tilbrook

Mark Allen

Scozzie (Colin & Shaun)

Peter Zajax

Thank you to all for turning up and adding to the rich tapestry of music that is the Open Mic @ The Dan. You’re all welcome anytime :)

In other Open Mic news, I wanted to let you all know that next weeks Open Mic @ The Dan scheduled for March 17th has been moved to Friday March 19th due to St Patricks Day festivites. After that, the Open Mic @ The Dan reverts back to Wednesdays again for your listening and performing pleasure.

Just a reminder about this weeks Open Mic @ The Dan for you all:
