Open Mic Network Update – March 8th, 2010

Hi everybody,

I know I haven’t updated you all in about a month but things have been so hectic lately what with Mad March and all but it’s safe to say that even though Adelaide is awash with festival fever, the Open Mic @ The Dan is as busy as ever.

I know that over the last few weeks the rush to get on the running sheet first has had some casualties and for that I apologise. It’s hard getting to The Dan at 6:30pm to find a pub full of Open Mic’ers swarming around the list but with no idea as to who turned up first (pre 6:30pm) it makes it very hard for me to be as fair and as equitable as possible when it comes to filling the Open Mic running sheet.

Last week I trialled a system (a big thank you to Rob Pickering for the initial idea and for Peter Clayton for running with it for me) where the first Open Mic’er to arrive pre 6:30pm has the responsibility of jotting down the names of the others in the order of their arrival. This then makes it easy for me to fill the running sheet fairly and objectively when I get there at 6:30pm.

Thankfully the system worked and everyone was happy. I’ll continue to fine-tune this system but I think this should demonstrate to all that the ideas of fair go at the Open Mic @ The Dan and the Open Mic community itself still remain as strong as when Darren Zaza and I first started it.

As well as the Open Mic @ The Dan holding its own in Mad March the amount of talented new faces gracing the Open Mic stage has been amazing. The new faces are:

Ryan Kemp

Grant Tilbrook

Mark Allen

Scozzie (Colin & Shaun)

Peter Zajax

Thank you to all for turning up and adding to the rich tapestry of music that is the Open Mic @ The Dan. You’re all welcome anytime :)

In other Open Mic news, I wanted to let you all know that next weeks Open Mic @ The Dan scheduled for March 17th has been moved to Friday March 19th due to St Patricks Day festivites. After that, the Open Mic @ The Dan reverts back to Wednesdays again for your listening and performing pleasure.

Just a reminder about this weeks Open Mic @ The Dan for you all:

It’s still first come first served so be early, have a meal and enjoy the ambiance that is The Dan.

Open Mic Network Update – February 8th, 2010

Hi everybody,

It’s starting to get busier and busier now at the Open Mic @ The Dan. Last week most of the 15 or so slots available were gone by 6:45pm which is not bad considering that I get to The Dan at 6:30pm to take down names.

Even though it’s so busy we still had a large number of new faces grace the Open Mic stage, in fact we broke a record with six new faces. The word is really getting around that the Open Mic @ The Dan is the place to be and for that I have all of you to thank because with every week that passes this community is growing stronger and stronger.

The new faces of last week were:

Karyn Pitman – Put her beautiful voice to the songs of Rob Pickering and Peter Clayton

Adam Booth – Played his solo acoustic guitar instrumentals

David Lane – Did a wonderful version of Jeff Buckley :)

Tim Forth – Is looking for a band. His songs were certainly worth listening to

Daniel Tanner – Came all the way from the UK to play (Well he’s traveling)

Robert The Lurker – Finally got the courage up to grace the stage :)

To all you guys, thank you for giving the Open Mic @ The Dan a go. Come back soon, the door is always open :)

Just a reminder of this weeks Open Mic @ The Dan for you all:

Open Mic @ The Dan

If last weeks rush to the running sheet was anything to go by you really need to make sure you get to The Dan as early as you can to avoid disappointment. I’ll be there from around 6:30pm to take down names.

Remember, it’s first come, first served.

See you Wensdee,

Open Mic Network Update – February 1st, 2010

Hi everybody,

2010 is looking like a busy year already for the Open Mic @ The Dan. We managed to fit 18 performers onto the running sheet and last week was the second week in a row that we started at 7:30pm rather than 8pm.

All in all though, the atmosphere at the venue was one of awesome community music. There were impromptu jams springing up from everywhere and the joyful sounds of community were ruminating through The Dan.

Last weeks Open Mic was an absolute joy to be part of. We even heard some Australian songs in celebration of a belated Australia Day (nice one Peter Clayton)

In the list of 18 performers there were three amazing new acts. They were (in order of appearance):

Michael & Jodie – An acoustic duo who had their first ever performance on a stage at the Open Mic @ The Dan. They did two covers but it was their original song that stole the show, as well as Jodie’s amazing voice.

Harry Thwaites – Initially contacted me via the web (yes the online marketing is really working here. I’m really happy about that), he put on a wonderful set of three songs. Just one man and an electric guitar. Very nice indeed.

Simon Basey – He of The Timbers fame , Darren Zaza’s favourite band at the moment (he saw them at the Grace Emily recently and can’t stop raving about them). Did three of his own songs that were wonderful stories to listen to. Made me want to go and check out more of Simon’s music asap.

To Michael, Jodie, Harry and Simon, thanks for giving the Open Mic @ The Dan a go. I hope you enjoyed yourselves and can’t wait to hear from you all again.

Welcome to the community :)

If you saw a couple of strange devices on the Open Mic stage last week don’t worry, it was only me experimenting with a bit of recording through the PA. The reason why I was doing this was to see if I could get some really clear live recordings of the Open Mic for the website, Facebook and MySpace pages plus, a possible Open Mic Network live CD one day.

As it turned out, the levels were a bit too high which made the whole recording distorted but the potential is certainly there. I also want to start doing some more videos as well but I’ll keep all of you posted as to the progression of my live recording and video experiments.

Just a reminder of this weeks Open Mic @ The Dan for you all:

Open Mic Network Update – January 25th, 2010

Hi everybody,

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was a real blast.

We had 17 performers providing an amazing night’s worth of entertainment for all who were there. The summer season has well and truly kicked in.

There were 2 new faces in the list of 17 performers that I need to mention. First of all there’s Claire Gurry who writes songs based on her very full, diverse and rather interesting life. She is a great example of what can be achieved when you roll up your sleeves and just dive into life.

Her infectious happiness was a real treat. Great energy :)

Secondly there was Tony Krelle who gave the Open Mic crowd 3 cover songs of very high quality. The great thing about Tony’s performance was that the covers he played were not from your stock standard cover band repertoire. Personally, I really appreciate that.

Thank you Claire and Tony for gracing the Open Mic stage, I hope you can come back again soon.

Just a reminder of what is happening this week. I think that as part of Australia Day celebrations everyone needs to play at least one Aussie song. What do you reckon?

Open Mic Network Update – January 18th, 2010

sunmicHi everybody,

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan would be up there for me as one of the busiest I’ve ever encountered, and the talent… there was musical talent coming from every direction.

I had an absolute ball.

It was so busy that both Darren and I decided to start the Open Mic a half an hour early to fit everybody in and even then we still had to turn people away (thankfully they stuck around and enjoyed the music anyway).

We had three new faces grace the Open Mic stage. First of all we had the singer/guitarist and the bass player from a band called Sycamore Road play some of their wonderful originals. I felt an instant connection as the bass player plays a Musicman Stingray 5 just like I do. NICE :)

Secondly we had Dennan Welch who has come over to Adelaide from the US and was keen to impress the crowd with his beautifully crafted acoustic songs. He succeeded in impressing the crowd. The last new face was Aggie Harris whose delicate vocals and music captured the hearts of the audience. I would love to hear more of Aggie’s music as I had missed some of it due to attending to other things.

To Dennan, Aggie and the guys from Sycamore Road, thanks for giving the Open Mic @ The Dan a go and hope to see you again very soon.

Other highlights of the night were:

  • The return of Lindsay Boyd
  • The Anthony D’antonio Band
  • SP and Sarah playing some recently written material
  • Beau Drummond coming back for some more

Open Mic Network Update – January 11th, 2010

sunmicHi everybody,

I hope you all had a Merry Xmas and a wonderful New Year.

2010 is now upon us which means a new year, a new decade and a new start for the Open Mic Network. The first thing I want to do is to thank you for being part of the Open Mic community because without you the Open Mic @ The Dan doesn’t exist.

Over the last 6 months the Open Mic @ The Dan has gone from strength to strength even without the email updates which tells me that the Open Mic Community has really grown to own this weekly event.

I for one am very, very proud of what we as a community have achieved and what we’ll achieve in the future and because of this the Open Mic @ The Dan is now one of the premier Open Mics in Adelaide and one of the only ones that can found online (type in “open mics adelaide” in Google and see what come up).

Going through what happened during the last 6 months will take far too much of your time however, I will start off by saying that the Open Mic @ The Dan on New Years Eve (NYE) went off in a big way.

It started off a bit slow to begin with but by around 10:30pm punters off the street, diners from the back room and Open Mic artists were pouring into the front bar which gave a much needed boost for the Open Mic numbers. All in all, we had a full house by the time we were counting down the new year.

I took phots of the event however, they didn’t turn out for some reason. DOH!

The highlight of NYE was Bill the Barman taking centre stage at the end of the night. The man plays some very interesting covers and had the whole pub transfixed on what he was doing.

I hope to see and hear more of Bill the Barman in 2010.

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was only slightly quieter due to people being away or staying home because of the heat however, the people that were there had a fantastic time and some great music was heard.

Some highlights included:

getpucked

Mel Daniel promoting her Ice Hockey benefit night (**Get Pucked Adelaide Assassins Fundraiser – Live @ Light Square Friday Jan 15th @ 7pm. $15 entry**)

seriousrossneilson
Ross Neilson celebrating his birthday

anthonydantonio
Anthony D’antonio playing more of his original music

beaudrommond

New face Beau Drummond completely stunning everybody with his first-time-on-stage performance

Open Mic Network Update – July 20th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody and an extra big welcome to all new subscribers to the Open Mic Network.

The big news for this week is that the Open Mic @ The Joiners Arms is no more.

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Joiners was the last straw as the “So You Think You Can Dance” spectacular at the Entertainment Centre decimated any chance of getting a car-park. Even I had to park half a kilometre down Manton Street and I get to the venue early.

It was so quiet that the first performer was on at 8:35pm.

I worked out that over the last 10 weeks of the Open Mic @ The Joiners we had car-parking issues for 6 of them, it’s a situation in which Darren and I did not want to continue.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came out to the Joiners Arms and supported us and to let everybody know that at the moment the focus is to build up the Open Mic @ The Dan again as the premier Open Mic in this town and, at the same time start casually looking for another Thursday night Open Mic venue. I still believe that there’s room for another Open Mic in the network but where?

Who knows? Any ideas? Please let me know…

Last weeks Open Mic @ The Dan was also a fairly quiet affair however, it was a very cold night and it rained pretty heavily which would’ve put people off a bit. For the people who did brave the cold the reward was a toasty warm pub and superb entertainment all round starting off with the very funny Frank McCoy whose song “VN Commodore” is my fave.

He hadn’t been along to The Dan in a long time so it was great to have Frank back on the Open Mic stage.

Speaking about welcoming back performers after a long absence, we also had an amazing performance by Pete The Didgeman who gave all of us masterclass in Didgeridoo playing but again, one of the highlights for me was doing some songs at the end of the night with Looshbaby. Inspiring stuff.

In other Open Mic news…

I got a Facebook message from someone wanting to sell a bass guitar and an amp for $500. If there’s anyone who wants more information about the gear please contact me.

On Saturday night we just cracked the 100 fans barrier which means that the Open Mic Network Facebook page now has its own username. You can now find it at www.facebook.com/openmicnetwork.

Open Mic Network Update – July 13th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody and a big welcome to all new subscribers to the Open Mic Network.

Thank you to everybody who has give either Darren or myself feedback regarding the Open Mic @ The Joiners. We are fast approaching the end of the trial period and all feedback is most welcomed. The online discussion is still up on the Open Mic Network Facebook Page so if you haven’t done so already, pop in and give us your views.

Speaking about Facebook, we are 5 fans short of getting our 100 fan target.

Once the Facebook page has 100 fans we can change the Facebook generated URL to our own URL (something easier to remember like www.facebook.com/openmicnetwork). If you’re on Facebook please consider becoming a fan and/or tell all your friends about the page.

Share the love around :)

Open Mic @ The Dan
Last week was a bumper week for the Open Mic @ The Dan. It seems that with every week that goes by it gets busier and busier.

We had 2 new faces grace the Open Mic stage. The first of them was well known singer Kylena Vigus who accompanied Rob Pickering on 3 songs and did a beautiful job. The second new face was Jacob Majba who informed me that his Open Mic performance was his first anywhere. I was really impressed with what he did and I hope that both Jacob and Kylena come back soon :)

It was also marked the welcome return of the duo of David Corkhill and John Veikerts plus the sweet, sweet sounds of Ute and her accordion.

Open Mic @ The Joiners
Last weeks Open Mic @ The Joiners was the quietest one yet with only 9 performers on the running sheet however, everyone who attended made the night last until 11pm by playing 4 songs instead of the usual 3. I must admit, the weather was very much against us that night, I hadn’t seen it so wet in a long, long time.

It was really great to see the return of Meredith W. Riley to the Open Mic stage. She was showcasing some new of her material and I tell you what, I could’ve listened to it all night but it was the first song that Jen Turner sang acapella that for me, was the highlight of the night. That song got the hairs standing on the back of everyone’s necks.

Breathtaking…

Open Mic Network Update – July 6th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody,

It’s amazing how taking a couple of weeks off from writing updates does wonders for general wellbeing and gaining a better sense of perspective on things. My batteries are now recharged and ready to go.

First of all I wanted to wish Ian Warren a very happy 50th birthday. Ian held a party on The Gov balcony last Saturday night and it was a hoot. It was one big Open Mic essentially and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Thanks for the invite mate.

One thing I have noticed over the last couple of weeks is that the attendances at The Dan have risen again while The Joiners have been decreasing. Seeing that the trial period for The Joiners finishes at the end of this month, it would be a good time to find out from you all what you think of the Open Mic @ The Joiners.

Has it worked for you? Pro’s and Con’s? I’ve put up a discussion topic on the Open Mic Network Facebook Page called “The Dan vs The Joiners – Honest Feedback Please” for you to check out and comment on. You can get to it HERE and while you at it, have a look at the other discussion topics on offer and put in your 2 cents worth. You know you want to :)

Speaking about Facebook pages, the Open Mic Network Facebook Page has now got 90 fans which is a fantastic effort however, we’re 10 fans short for the page to get its own URL (apparantly FB will give pages a URL of its choice if the page has 100 fans or more) so, if you’re not a fan of the Open Mic Network Facebook Page then please consider being one.

If you’re already a fan of the Open Mic Network then broadcast to your friends list and help build this amazingly talented Open Mic community, one performer at a time.

Open Mic @ The Dan
As mentioned a little earlier, the Open Mic @ The Dan has experienced a marked increase in attendance making a spot on the list a very lucrative one indeed. The last fortnight has also seen a few new faces grace the Open Mic stage. Faces such as:

  • Luka – From Sydney, this dynamic performer charmed his way through to the hearts of the audience via his amazing songs.
  • Little Hefty – Also from Sydney (but born in Adelaide and now making this fine town his home again) he gave The Dan a stunning performance just using voice, acoustic guitar and stompbox. Noyce!
  • Jessica Braithwaite – Sang her songs like a possessed crazy woman (well, one of her songs was called “Crazy” I think). Thoroughly entertaining both her and her crowd.
  • Adam Waldron – The man plays blues guitar like a master twice his age. Loved every minute of his blues guitar masterclass

Open Mic @ The Joiners
While The Dan has experienced an increase in attendance, The Joiners on the other hand has experienced a marked downturn in attendance. As mentioned earlier I’ve put up a discussion topic on Facebook to see what your thoughts are.

Even though there is a smaller number performers that doesn’t mean that the quality of performers has diminished. In fact it seems that the Open Mic @ The Joiners has been the catalyst of the formation of some Open Mic supergroups.

The most notable supergroup is “The Robinsons” made up of David Robinson, Lindsay Boyd and Costa (of course) and “The Folettes” made up of Bryan Foley, Darren Zaza and Costa (again). It’s great to see the Open Mic community networking in this way and it’s amazing what music comes out of these impromptu unions.

Special mention needs to go out to Loosh who dazzles the Open Mic @ The Joiners every time he steps onto the stage. Love ya work mate :)

Ok, just a reminder of what is happening this week.

Open Mic Network Update – June 15th, 2009

sunmicHi everybody,

Last week was a very quiet week all round for the Open Mic Network but hey, thank goodness for The Dan and The Joiners having open fires and good old fashioned pub grub to warm the cockles. This cold snap we’re experiencing will continue for a little while yet but the quality of the Open Mic performances at both venues keep getting hotter and hotter.

I was talking with Darren Zaza the other day about how many Open Mic’ers are really developing as performers and songwriters. I think that this is due in part to their regular appearances at The Dan or The Joiners. I know for a fact that some performers are using the Open Mics as a way of rehearsing their material.

Something for all of us to think about…

Open Mic @ The Dan
The Dan provided a warm and toasty atmosphere for everyone who turned up and even though we just missed out on a full running sheet all performers managed to fill in their times very nicely.

Out of the 14 performers we had one new face by the name of Jen Turner who sang two covers and one of her own compositions which I really enjoyed listening to. Personally I’m really interested in what other original material Jen has up her sleeve.

jenturner

Now that there is a little bit more room on the running sheet to move things around it would be great to see Bill the Barman get up and do a few tunes. I’ll make that one of my goals for the next few weeks because you can’t get enough of Bill.

bill

Bills Best Side

Open Mic @ The Joiners
Initially it was so quiet at the beginning we started proceedings at 8:15 to ensure we had some performers to kick off the night with however, a little later in the night the running sheet began to fill. Personally, I’d stay home too if I had the chance, it was a very cold night.

Last week at The Joiners marked the return of Angels Fan #1, Greg Milton who turned on his drum machine, strapped on his SG and cranked up the distortion to belt out 3 of his own songs but for me, the highlight was getting Glennis from behind the bar up on stage for a rousing version of “Stand By Me” with Darren and myself backing her up.
